This is actually old news. Pretty much immediately after the 2008 crash it was apparent that illegal immigration was slowing dramatically, and it was widely reported at the time. The Pew report is just confirming that.
Won’t change anyone’s minds, though: the people who have made up their minds that THIS IS A CRISIS! won’t let mere facts get in the way.
I’m pretty sure Trump’s response will be, “When they heard about me and my wall, they all ran back across the border.”
All of my likes!
And hey, someone should point out to the GOP that if we’re down about 140,000 Mexicans we ought to be able to absorb 10,000 Syrians without even trying! Plus, chances are once they’re here, the Syrians will become so disgusted by us that they’ll move to Mexico as well! Win-Win GOP! ;-)
I thought the GOP mantra was “stuff happens” and to not rush and pass laws after a tragedy.
The Christian community in Iraq is largely gone now. Just one three remains from the pre-war days. Syria is no better, with tens of thousands fleeing the country. Will they return? I hope so, but I fear they won’t.
I do hope they find success in their new homelands, but I can’t help but feel sad - still. Their ancient cultures will be absorbed, and lost. They’ll trade their Aramaic for the vulgar. Stuffed grape leaves for Le Big Mac. And where will they live? In a banlieue? Or some tract house at the edge of a village?
That’s a sad legacy.

I guess Ben Carson got envious about the coverage Trump has received today, so that he decided to jump in as well.
Speaking to reporters following a campaign stop in Mobile, Alabama, Carson stressed that the United States wants smart leaders who care about people, but noted there should always be a balance between safety and humanitarian concerns.
“For instance, you know, if there is a rabid dog running around your neighborhood, you’re probably not going to assume something good about that dog, and you’re probably gonna put your children out of the way,” Carson said. “Doesn’t mean that you hate all dogs by any stretch of the imagination.”
Continuing his analogy, the Republican presidential candidate said that screening refugees is like questioning how you protect your children, even though you love dogs and will call the Humane Society to take the dog away to reestablish a safe environment.
“By the same token, we have to have in place screening mechanisms that allow us to determine who the mad dogs are, quite frankly,” he added. “Who are the people who wanna come in here and hurt us and wanna destroy us? Until we know how to do that, just like it would be foolish to put your child out in the neighborhood knowing that that was going on, it’s foolish for us to accept people if we cannot have the appropriate type of screening.”
That’s an unfortunate metaphor.
We shoot rabid dogs.

You think most republicans would flinch at the idea of shooting Muslims on sight?

I don’t understand, is he saying that syrian refugees are dogs and that the ISIS-sympathisers among them are the rabid dogs? Or that all syrian refugees are dogs exhibiting rabid-like qualities (whereas refugees from other countries are regular dogs), and have to be checked out before they’re allowed to walk through a neighbourhood?
Either way, really, wow.

That statement is as silly as suggesting that all Muslims are terrorists.
Just hours after first opening the can of worms, Trump doubles down on his tracking all Muslims in the US:
Donald Trump, the Republican front-runner for president, told NBC News on Thursday night that he “would certainly implement” a database system tracking Muslims in the United States. … Later, Trump was repeatedly asked to explain the difference between requiring Muslims to enter their information into a database and making Jewish people register in Nazi Germany. He responded four times by saying, “You tell me.”
So yeah, suggesting shooting Muslims on sight will come about … oh, say, next Tuesday.
If you want to address ideological violence in America, start with the Right. Which is going to be predominantly white and Christian.

Wow tracking people by religion. Next we’ll have race and then political party that way the GOP can round up everyone they don’t like and just repeat one of history’s more tragic events.
Cool, thanks. I’ve been looking for something like this.
Yeah. I don’t know if I can bring myself to vote for her after this. I don’t normally want to hold it against someone when they take stances I might disagree with if their overall philosophy is something I support but this might be too far.

The Nazi slogan during their elections was after all “Make Germany Great Again.”

His camp also released an ad with Waffen-SS soldiers on it. Whoops.
You know, that stuff doesn’t bother me at all. Misidentifying some stock footage is a pretty dang venal sin.
Easy to overcome – just have all of the immigrants buy a gun and the NRA will loudly insist that tracking them in any database violates the 2nd Amendment.
