You’re also describing my parents- who became that way while I was off in the military (whereas the military turned me liberal)

Every day for the past few years my parents have wanted me to put my 401k into CD’s and savings accounts because Obama will crater the economy (that said, if Walker won I would probably bet on that)

Hey another for the ‘my parents have gone crazy Foxophiles over the last 5 years’ crew! It is very weird to have some of the conversations we have, especially over things like labor unions, considering my father in a real and direct way has benefited from the firefighters union. You know, pensions are causing the state budget to implode, except you know the ones I get and all that.

His views on Obama are, to put it simply, right in line with Desslock. The weird thing, when pressed on many issues, he actually doesn’t ascribe to the hardcore right wing talking points. Things like pollution controls and environmental regulations are things that, in a vacuum, he likes and agrees with. But then the Animas River happens, and no matter what he may think of conservation efforts, it becomes a point at which to just attack the Obama administration.

I went home before going to AC/DC last weekend and my mother and aunt told me that they saw a video where rock singers confess selling their soul to the devil. It included Jim Morrison speaking in tongues. Somehow Obama was involved.

The sad part is my family has always been like this. If they had seen all the blinking red devil horns at Gillette they would have had a stroke.

Damn, guys, at this point I think we should form some sort of support group or something. I’ve got a family gathering for my mother’s 70th birthday later this month and I’m sure after the conversations there I’ll need someone to talk to!

Especially if they were accompanied by “Highway to Hell.” The Fox-philes have been circulating this meme:

And, of course, it’s accompanied by all sorts of self-congratulation on how clever they are. {sigh}

I tell my family I believe modern humans are the result of 65 separate genetic corrections by Zeta Reticulans over the course of our development. Then I follow up with proof that Obama is a shape-shifting reptilian. I don’t even know how they can argue when faced with this kind of evidence.

I can’t wait until my I-got-mine-why-should-I-have-to-pay-taxes rich family members try to bring up Obamacare and how it’s terrible and ruining the country next.

Guys I think I’ma win this one, mmkay.

I suspect some kind of repeat of the GOP primaries last cycle.

As for Carson, have seen him in person a couple of times here in Iowa. He does indeed come across as very intelligent, very well spoken, has a superb record as a surgeon, does a lot of whatever the medical equivilent is of “pro bono” work. On the religion side, heard him laugh and say, you know, I’m sure God watches us argue on disagreements on religious matters and shakes his head at our ignorance and says “People, what part of “Just love one another” did Jesus not make clear?”

I also liked his comment when he was asked at this rally his opinion of Hillary, and people started chanting some kind of anti HRC stuff. He said one of the things that is most damaging in our politics today is the desire to demonize anyone we disagree with. He said he certainly disagrees with HRC’s poltical views in a number of areas, but he’s sure they probably have things in common. And he commented that there’s no need to try to make the other person, whether it is Hillary or another GOP candidate, “evil”, let’s just stick to our policies and quit the character assassination.

If I was forced to pick between him and Trump, I’d easily pick Carson. He’s not gonna get the nomination, though. I wouldn’t bet $1 on who will at this point.

Yeah, while my initial reaction to him was fairly negative when I heard some of his more extreme religious views (which were being discussed in the context of a purely religious discussion), his overall demeanor seems different than that. He’s generally a fairly positive guy, which I think is appealing in an age of demonizing political opponents.

Obama ran on a similar platform, if we’ll recall. While many on the left were absolutely all about demonizing the republicans and Bush, Obama generally stuck to a pretty positive message, and it served him well.

Late for the bandwagon here, but yeah, my dad did the exact same thing. Fox News is a VERY powerful propaganda machine.

You have to consider that older generations don’t understand that the news can literally lie to your face and that’s legal and fine.

They grew up with the networks who had a lot more integrity than cable news could ever hope to. The concept of the news anchor having an agenda and being willing to lie about it isn’t one they can really wrap their heads around no matter how much you tell them otherwise. If you point out the lies, then they assume the lies are from YOUR sources, not theirs. I mean Fox News told them that the other networks are hiding the facts from them, so it must be true.

Don’t think too much about the cognitive dissidence of it all, odds are they don’t and couldn’t explain it themselves.

For the record both my parents fell into the same trap by only watching Fox News all day. It really is a brainwashing machine if you walk through that door without being skeptical. I mean there are plenty of people on this forum who are smart people that buy into it and when you point out the chinks in their armor, they can’t do anything other than drool all over you and start calling names or insulting.

Trump may be running into some problems now that he is starting to be asked about… specific things as opposed to generalities.

He had an interview with Hugh Hewitt, a conservative radio host the other day, and it did not go well. From an article:

The host began by asking each candidate about General Qassem Soleimani, the head of the Iran Revolutionary Guard’s Quds forces, and how the Iranian nuclear deal would affect Iran’s militant proxies.

Trump began his answer by discussing the Kurds, an ethnic group in the region. When Hewitt clarified that he said “Quds,” Trump replied, “Oh, I thought you said Kurds.”

On General Soleimani, Trump asked Hewitt, “Is he the gentleman that was going back and forth with Russia and meeting with Putin? I read something…Not good for us. And what it shows is a total lack of respect, I mean, that the other countries would even be entertaining him, and they’re entertaining him big league.”

Hewitt then asked if Trump was familiar with the major players in Middle Eastern groups, to include terrorist groups.

At this point, Trump was getting flustered, and accused Hewitt of asking him “gotcha” questions.

By contrast, let’s look at Carly Fiorina’s answers.

On General Soleimani:

On the names of terrorist leaders:

These were essentially softball questions that Hewitt was asking. He was giving the two candidates a chance polish their foreign policy credentials by ripping into Obama’s Iran deal and the mess that Iraq is in right now. Trump flubbed them both, however, and (as is his wont) he is calling out Hewitt as a “third rate radio host”. Which may be true, but still…

I don’t think it’s a big deal. Most of our congress, House and Senate, couldn’t tell you who Soleimani is. Which is fine - they’re juggling a hundred issues and he isn’t exactly a major player in our domestic affairs

Should a Presidential candidate know who he is? I’d expect someone who was passionate about the region to, but I wouldn’t expect every candidate to. As it stands, he did in the end correctly identify him - even if he doesn’t appear to know much about the general personally.

There’s little point in rattling of a list of the different terrorist fronts in the Middle East, they do change, and they tend to change fairly quickly. Look at Syria for example - there are dozens of different minor militia currently involved in the fighting. Will those groups exist in a year? Probably not, not in their current forms. They’ll split or get rolled up into better financed groups.

He should have asked Trump about his ideas for the Middle East, that would have been a far more interesting conversation.

I will be so good at the military, your head will spin

Anyone who buys into this kind of utter bullshit needs to have their voting rights revoked.
What are your plans for the military?
I’M GOING TO BE SUPER GOOD AT MILITARY.

Why don’t you support our troops, Timex?

Would it REALLY have been?

I would expect someone running for the highest post in our government to know who Soleimani is. He’s not a major player in our domestic affairs, true, but he is one of the top three players in Iranian affairs and thus one of the top ten players in the Middle East. If you’re a Republican candidate that is railing against Obama for the Iran Treaty, you’re going to look pretty goddamn stupid for not knowing who he is.

This hold a little more water, but I bet that Hillary could rattle off their names with no hesitation, despite not having been SecState for a couple years now. Sanders too.

The question isn’t whether a run-of-the-mill congresscritter knows his Quds from his Houthis, it’s whether someone who wants to run for POTUS knows it.

It’s not. It’s a random interview by a third-rate radio host. It simply illustrates (as if it needed to be shown) that Trump is all bark and no bite. “I will military the crap out of those guys, whoever they are!”

It wasn’t just that trump didn’t know who Solemani is. Even when prompted by the interviewer, specifically saying that he was the leader of the Quds forces, trump still botched it, seemingly not having any idea who the Quds forces even were.

That’s way worse than not recalling a specific name of a person.

Trump has been like that in every single interview I’ve ever seen. I guess it’s just noteworthy because it happened on a conservative media.

Whatever, we all know that radio host was no true Scotsman.
