Program association glitch with VLC

I have video files set to be associated with VLC. Recently, however, whenever I open one, VLC doesn’t launch. No error message, nothing. It just does nothing. Any idea how I fix this? I’m running Vista Home Premium.

right-click the file, open with, choose your program, check ‘always open’

Have you rebooted since this started? A lot of media players will only allow one instance of themselves to run at once so if you’ve got an instance “running” but it is all crunked up and not visible on the desktop you’ll get a situation like you describe where nothing seems to happen when you try to open another video or music file. The new launch attempts to use the existing instance of the program, not realizing it is basically hung and running in a loop or whatever.

If this is actually what is wrong you shouldn’t need to reboot, just go into task manager and kill VLC.exe or whatever that might still be running, buf if you HAVE rebooted and still see this problem it must be something else.

Jesus I am a fool. Thanks CCZ, killing it in Task Manager has worked.
