Has anyone else see Push yet? I caught it this weekend, knowing nothing about it other than it involved psychics, and was pleasantly surprised by how cool it was. I don’t want to say too much which might spoil the film’s few surprises, other than it’s about a McGuffin hunt in Hong Kong. Not sure the plot was actually any good - like Lucky Number Slevin, the director’s last film, it’s not quite as clever as it wants you to think it is - but it moved at a good clip and I liked its take on psychic powers. My biggest complaint may be it isn’t big-budget enough to have really cool psychic battles.
It just feels like it came with “cult classic” stamped on its forehead. Can’t quite recommend it at full ticket price, but worth a matinee or DVD rental, IMHO.
Hey its Paul McGuigan week here at QT3 (I went with Gangster No1 for my film club pick). I was totally uninterested in Push until I saw he was the director. Now I’m only mostly uninterested. I’ll probably check it out on DVD.
This feels like some sort of meta commentary on the film industry. In Fantastic Four, the worst actor in the movie (Chris Evans) was given a superstar role, and now he’s been cast in Push for what seems to be no other reason than having a pretty face.
I didn’t see Jumper, so I can’t compare the two. But Push makes a nice counter-point to, say, Heroes.
Chris Evans is outclassed by Djimon Hounsou and Dakota Fanning - but fortunately(?), not much is expected of him, so he manages fine. “Blank-faced pretty boy” actually works to his advantage as a loser on the run.
I don’t want to say much about the film, because part of the fun for me was seeing how they handled the various powers, which would be ruined by too many spoilers. E.g., there’s a film clip on Apple’s movie trailer page: DON’T watch it, because it’s from the finale and gives away far too much.
EDIT: speaking of Sunshine, I just noticed Cliff Curtis is in both Push & Sunshine as well.
