Qt3 Dwarf Fortress Succession Game

Rules borrowed from Boatmurdered thread 2
Each turn is one game year, from Granite 1 (the new year, as spring starts) to Granite 1 one year later. Post your exploits as they happen, but put a priority on finishing quickly instead of chronicling every little thing. Once you’ve completed your turn, save your progress, zip up the save file and directory, and post it on rapidshare or something. The next player will take over management of Boatmurdered.

Please, don’t intentionally destroy Boatmurdered. It may be a fetid hole in the ground full of furious dwarves who kill each other more often than they accomplish anything, but a lot of people poured their hearts and dreams into that hole in the ground. Instead, simply do the best you can, completely ignoring everyone else’s plans while you retinker the cave into the ultimate souffle making empire. Then pass it on to the next player with half as many dwarves, because you forgot to arm your soldiers and they tried to wrestle fire elementals to death.

You don’t have to be any good at Dwarf Fortress to run Boatmurdered. After ten years, it had a mere 63 dwarves, one of whom was apparently dying of heroin addiction and several of whom are crippled or bedridden. You could hardly do worse.

If you want to be added to the list of eligible players, just say so and I’ll add you on. When your turn comes up, you’ll have 24 hours to respond (you will be notified in thread and any other way possible) before you get kicked to the back of the list and the next player gets a shot. If you can’t do it now, but can in a few days, say so and you’ll be bumped back a slot or two instead of all the way to the end.

ADDITIONAL REQUESTS

If you aren’t playing, we welcome comments and stuff but don’t thread shit and don’t bash any of our managers - we aren’t all experts and this is for fun. If we did it all right, it wouldn’t make for a good story.

If you want to join, please speak up! We can add players as we go and see how long the fort can last!

And with that - I’ll start the world and do year 1 and then make it available

MURDERRRRRR TIIIIMMMMEEEEE

I tried to play DF. I wanted to like it, I really did…

I’ll happily play a turn or few. Can we keep the hype down on it. LPs basically sprout dramatic asshol…I mean critics. Generally I am much more interested in turns turning over quickly with highlights of interesting stuff then the inevitable long slog between overseers as people try to craft the next boat murdered.

I would volunteer, however I propose a change to the normal order of things. You have 2 or 3 days for your turn, with a max of a 2 year term. Every time we do this unless theres massive enthusiasm someone decided to take a long time to tell people they can’t take their turn. Which saps the enthusiasm of people who do want to play when someone takes a week to say oops can’t do it. This way we can also schedule so and so is playing on this day.

I bowed out of these in the past because I always felt like I don’t know the game well enough, but it sounds like I’m about in the same place as McMaster (working through Calistas’ book), so as long as it’s n00b friendly, I’m in.

I like Morberis’ rules. Might even suggest people play no more than 1 year. But “do what you can in 3 days and then tell us about it” sounds like the right approach.

Should we all use the same tileset? And what about other tools? I know DwarfTherapist is considered indispensable, but I’ve never tried it. I guess these are the ground rules that need to be set up…

On bf it worked well to just zip up the save and share it on google drive or whatever. I’d recommend dt but if you prefer playing without it it doesn’t screw up the save.

Personally I don’t really care what tools someone uses. They don’t mess up the saves and they don’t let you cheat. Ok wait, no tools that allow cheating. There

I’d be up for it, no guarantees the player following me inherits anything worthwhile, of course…

Glad we have some interest! Here’s a few things -

  1. We should discuss world generation settings

  2. Tilesets, though I’m pretty sure you can update and send saves via the LNP interface for Windows.

  3. Length of turn - I would suggest the second set of rules for Boatmurdered to keep the game moving, but we can make it 2 years and 3 days per turn if we need to.

Anything else?

Lets start today! Just grab lnp and go! I say this as I am finishing a brutal work week and would love to df!

Find a site with running water and flux and we should be good.

I’d play if there’s room for another noob, I just got back into DF last week.

OK! I’ll generate a world, etc. Let me put up the rules

Updated original post with rules and requests as well as schedule.

OK, generating seed then I’ll begin our trek and pass it on!

I’ll try to pick a good spot and set up some stores/etc for Wolff. I’ll update the thread as my turn goes

Here’s our world!

Turn 1 - set up

Welp, that’s it. I’m destitute. I spent my last coin to avoid having my legs broken by Daffur.

I hate Daffur. I hate this city.

I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one as I see a rather clean looking dwarf disappear down an alley at the behest of a few less than savory gentlemen. At that time a group of guards charge into the alley. I can’t help but take a peak.

It seems the clean cut dwarf has been knocked unconscious and was in the middle of being robbed when the guards came by. Bad luck for those thieves, but fuck them. I do, however, see the possibility to lighten our mugging victim of a few coins while no one is looking.

I quickly duck into the alley and grab the poor bastards purse. Time to move! While walking, I begin to rummage through my ill-gotten goods. Nothing in here but a piece of paper and a biscuit. Well, I’m hungry. Why not have a biscuit while reading this note.

Not paying attention to where I’m going, I wander into what I think is the bar. Maybe this fool had enough coin for a drink. Mmmm, a drink. I’m a few steps inside before I realize it isn’t a bar. There’s no laughter, clinking glasses or the smell of vomit. Well, not an overpowering smell of vomit. That’s when I look up and see a band of dwarves gearing up.

“You’re here!”

“I’m here,” I reply deciding to just go with it.

“We thought you were lost! I’m Rakust, the miner! We were afraid you weren’t going to make it, but I told those others to show me a dwarf who doesn’t want to make coin and mine valuable gems and I’ll show you a corpse! Are you ready to move?”

“Aye,” I respond and start to help these guys load up. He most certainly mentioned coin and gems. I’ve got nothing better to do and could use some time away from this gods forsaken city.

The wagon rolls out at midday. I drop back a bit and go through the coin purse I lifted from my “friend.” Time to finally read this note.

"Kumil Bimarban,

We have heard much of your expertise in farming and brewing and would have you join us. The king has requested I put together a band of dwarves to strike out and explore new regions for the mutually beneficial wealth of our house and kingdom. You have been sent a small stipend to help with equipment, but most of what you’ll need is provided by the king and will be hauled upon our wagon. I will tell you this - our mission will be dangerous.

Prepare yourself for your journey to Kisspaddled. I… I know it’s an odd name. The king has a weird sense of humor. I believe you’ll understand better as our trip progresses.

Sincerely,
Edem Tunginon
Expedition Leader of The Whimsical Sacks"

So I’m now a member of The Whimsical Sacks and I’m headed for Kisspaddled.

I may have made a mistake.

I’d love to join, but I’m unsure if my laptop will run DF. I tried it a while ago, but world generation took way too long, so I never got past that.

Could I have a copy of the world file, please, just to see how it runs? If it runs alright, I’ll join.

Turn 1 - Spring

We arrived at Kisspaddled late last night. It was so dark we couldn’t really tell anything about the surroundings but now that it’s daylight… well, calling this place a dump won’t work as a dump is at least SOMETHING.

Surrounded by these horrible trees with that disgusting sky above makes me want to puke. We need to get digging immediately. On the trip I made friend with our leader. She’s intelligent and full of vigor, but I can tell she’s new at this like me. I offer to help her out as much as I can - she accepts.

First things first, we dig our way into a nice, safe mountain and begin preparing for the years to come. We set up a couple of stockpiles for wood, stone and food and begin work on a Trade Depot as well as pens for the animals.

We’ve excavated a large area on the lower level of our initial cavern and our people are in the middle of cleaning out the space for workshops to create our beds and defenses. Luckily not much has been going on. The cats are hell on the lizards and hamsters in this area.

This is going to take some work.

@Nikolaj - when I’m done with this year, I’ll send it to you to try when I send it on!

Turn 1 - Summer

Another uneventful season of hard labor and progress. We had a few immigrants show up and join our team - including a couple of children. This isn’t really the place for kids, but to each their own.

This brings our stalwart crew to 11 members. I welcome the additions as I’m very tired of hauling shit around. The new people always get the shit jobs, and I can’t wait!

The ground floor of Kisspaddled is roughly the same if not a bit tidier. We’ve spent the summer gathering materials for the rougher months to come. A chicken showed up out of nowhere so we threw it in the pens with the other birds.

Our second floor is coming along nicely. We’ve added a number of workshops and have begun creating the items we’ll need for traps as well as doors to seal the fort if we run into trouble. I’ve taken the liberty of designing a meeting hall and dormitory for our men as well as setting our noble leader up in her own accommodations across the hall from the proles.

Summer is coming to an end and I still have much to do if we’re to survive til next spring.

Turn 1 -Autumn

This fall Autumn has been very productive.

We had a couple of new migrants show up and were put to work. Other than that, though, we had some merchants stop by. In preparation of this day, I had ordered our stone crafter to start making toys and I was right. These crazy bastards love toys! I traded a handful of bobbles for quite a bit of meat and plant seeds.

We began work on trapping the entryway with stone fall traps in case any of the natives decide to get sassy. On that front, a Ravenman was sighted on the far reaches or our land. That was a great motivator for our mechanic to get to work.

On our lower floor I’ve set up a kitchen and still and connected them to the food store on the first floor. Adding some walls to up security and smoothing out our dorm.

Time to prepare for spring. I expect I might take a break after this season.
