I was new to the leaguelet thing and didn’t really think through the full implications at the beginning of the month, but now that they’ve bitten me I may as well squawk and hope to improve them for the future.

I get that the idea is to provide incentive for people to keep playing games, and not be able to have a lucky 3-1 start and then stop playing to sit on that 75% win rate, but I think it’s going too far in the other direction now, creating counterintuitive results. For example, in a 4-person league, if player A goes 5-0, B and C each go 3-4, and D goes 2-5, the playoff would be B and C.

Less extreme of an example, my 5-3 record was the best win rate in the league, but I missed the playoffs in favor of someone below .500 and someone with a 5-5 record. The 5-5 is particularly galling since it means that a loss is better than a game in hand. I don’t think the rankings should ever directly reward losing, but I was in a situation where if I had known how the rankings would shake out, I could have conceded two games in progress and instantly qualified, which seems silly.

A simple change that should fix this issue would be to make it so that instead of qualifying based on your ranking in whichever category you ranked the worst in, use the average of the two rankings. So where I was #1 in one category and #7 in the other, that would average out to #4. Other options would be to use total wins instead of total games played, which would still incentivize playing a lot without skewing things so much, or to say that losses are freely available if they would improve your overall standing. There are probably better options out there, but they might involve a bit more bookkeeping.

That’s a good point Thraeg, I was just happy to make it in and didn’t really think too much more about it. The fact that I just had the time to get in more games probably shouldn’t weigh so heavily.

I just joined 92700, it’s actually been a while since we’ve gone up against each other now that I think about it.

That’s win percentage and total games and total wins side by side. If we sort by win percentage and total wins (column 1 and column 3), we get:

Anyone mind? That way our current games still matter. And we get to play more!

Sounds good to me. Thraeg and Dave, should we treat the games we just started as our playoffs? Only person I’m not in a game with at the moment is Sharaleo, 98132 is still open if you want to use it.

The Quartertothree Pew Pew Protocol (QP3)

When a leaguelet ends, the playoffs will follow this protocol:

Number of participants. The number of playoff spots will be a power of 2 and no more than half of the number of participants. For example, if 12 people played in a leaguelet, then 4 playoff spots at most will be open.

Eligibility. No one with zero wins or less than three games played may make the playoffs.

Choice protocol. Two rankings, one by win percentage and one by number of games played, will be compared row by row. As soon as a player has appeared in both rankings, the player will be added to the overall ranking list. This process continues until the number of playoff spots are filled. Ties for the final spots will be broken by win percentage.

The following amendment has been adopted by popular acclaim and forthright leadership!

To replace “one by number of games played” with “one by the number of wins” in Article 3.

So say we all! The amended QP3 shall be inscribed into the fourth post of this thread.
