Qt3 Official Unofficial 2009 Oscar Pool

Welcome to the first (to my knowledge) official unofficial Qt3 2009 Oscar pool!

I’m starting a thread for Qt3ers to post who they think will win in each respective Academy Award category. After the winners are announced, I will tally the scores and announce the winner of the pool.

The scoring will be as follows:

  1. If you make the correct choice in the following categories: Performance by an actor in a leading role, Performance by an actress in a leading role, Achievement in directing, Best motion picture of the year, you will receive FIVE points for each winning pick.

  2. If you make the correct choice for the following categories: Performance by an actor in a supporting role, Performance by an actress in a supporting role, Best animated feature film of the year, Best documentary feature, you will receive FOUR points for each winning pick.

  3. If you make the correct choice in any of the other categories, you will receive THREE points for each winning pick.

The only rules are:

  1. Post your pool picks by February 21 at the latest.
  2. You may edit your submitted list any time except after midnight GMT on February 21.
  3. There are no post count rules since, well, we’re really betting on what we think snotty Hollywood types will pick. What they pick will ultimately decide the winner of this pool, not trolling for a certain movie, so it doesn’t matter if you’re a newcomer to the forums.

Please post your picks in the following format for my easy perusal (you can quote my next post with the list of nominees, copy and paste it in your own post’s field, then delete as appropriate to speed it up):

Category: (in bold)
Your pick for winner in that category.

Please post your picks in the same order as the list of nominees below.

The next post will have the full list of the nominees to help with logistics! So please refrain from posting until I have the list up.

Hey folks. Sorry for my long absence - I explained the reasons in the Movie Club thread. I’ll make sure I post the winners of the pool today, and apologies for the delay.

Cheers,
Kareem

The final tally:

Jeremy Johnsen: 46
Mchankwilliams: 44
Sluggo: 43
Omniscia: 42
Alexlitel: 40
Gremlinclr: 38
Troy S Goodfellow: 30
Equis: 27
Jon Danger: 25
Demon G Sides: 17
Wolfbane: 16

I’m sure I made mistakes despite double checking the scores. So please check your score, especially if you’re within throwing distance of the top spot.

Some comments:

  1. Everyone got the prediction for best animated feature correct. Someone needs to step up and challenge Pixar.
  2. I believe everyone also got the Heath Ledger pick correct.
  3. A lot of folks lost a significant number of points for what I believe (IMHO) are picks based on what they hoped would win instead of what had a more realistic chance. This is particularly evident in the best song and best score categories, where a large number of the posters picked the Wall-E entries, or the cinematography and visual effects categories, where quite a few picked either the Dark Knight or Ironman. Perhaps another example, though I’m not sure if it’s because it was the only pick anyone watched or because it’s what people were rooting for, is Presto in the short animated features category.
  4. Quite a few didn’t correctly predict the best actor/actress categories. I wonder what the reason for this is.
  5. I believe no one picked the correct best live action short film.
