Racing Wheels

I’ve been playing Toca3 for a while now, and have ordered GT Legends and GTR2 … so I’m thinking I might want a racing wheel. However, they all look pretty bulky, and was wondering how these things attach to your desk. Is it a clamp like a desk light might have, or suction caps, or what? If I have only a limited amount of space on my desk (say, 1.5X the width of my keyboard) in front of my moniter, and my desk lip is pretty shallow (an inch before it hits an inner wooden strut), do I have space for this? Also, I’ll need to take it off after use so that it isn’t an eyesore to my girlfriend (she already rolls her eyes at my joystick and trackIr headset) so it has to be easily removeable.

so far this one looks like a good bet? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826128006

That’s the wheel I have. It’s nice. I play more arcade-style racing games, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t be suitable for the more sim-style stuff.

It’s got three clamps that hold it in place, and it takes a sizable chunk of desk surface, so it sounds like it might be a little tight for you, but then again I don’t think these things come much smaller. The clamps wouldn’t be a problem, I think. They’re pretty easy to untighten and remove quickly.

I’ve also got the exact same wheel. I’ve had it for a year or so now. I’ve also only played arcade style racers (mostly NFS most wanted). The force effects are great (much better than that ms 360 wheel). When on sale the price goes as low as $50 (great bargain). The 3 clamps are very sturdy and easy and quick to setup and put away.

Thanks guys. Looks like convincing my girlfriend I need it will be the biggest hurdle then.

btw, seeing as you guys are more arcade racers, check out Flatout2 (for PC)… it’s by far the best I’ve played in the genre. Strong action and awesome damage and physics had me liking it better than even Burnout.

It has 3 clamps. One in the back and two on the sides. I got a little more then 2 inches so the wheel can’t be set all the way back and the side clamps just make it. An inch is too short IMHO. If you are getting it at a store, see if they can open one and show you.
I’m very happy with the wheel itself. I only play sims (GTR2, RBR) but I’m not an authority on that. Some sim forumers bitch about it, but they bitch about everything.

That is a good one. The only alternative around that price range is the DFP:

Same pedals, but more buttons and up to 900º steering. PS2 and PC compatible. I bought it for GT4 in the PS2 and then discovered PC based sims (rfactor/LFS/GTR) so I haven’t hooked it to the console more than once.

Cheaper ones from Logitech are crap, and other companies seem content leaving this whole market for Logi. There’s a Thrustmaster with three pedals that looks decent on paper, but I don’t know anybody who has it.

A caveat, if you get bitten by the sim bug you will we wanting a G25 very soon. I had to go into full annoying kid mode for more than a month before the wife surrendered and let me store the DFP and order the G25.

I don’t play racing sims on my computer as much as I before, but I used to spend a lot of time on rec.autos.simulators and the racesimcentral forums. There used to be a lot of complaints about this wheel (aka “Logitech Momo Black”), particularly about the shift paddles behind the wheels. I don’t know if Logi’s fixed its design since its introduction, but there were reports that these would break with moderate use. Of course, you could always map shift functions to the front buttons, but it’s a durability issue you might want to look into.

I still use the original Logitech Momo Red for those times when I feel like taking the Lotus 49 for a spin. It’s a wonderful wheel, though the pedals crapped out a few years back. If I were doing more sim racing today, I’d have bought a G25 by now.

Yeah, the G25 is pretty great, and actually takes up less room on the desk than the Momo. But it’s also like $300. The pedals on the black Momo are pretty cheap compared to the G25 or even the red Momo, and I know there are occasional issues with their calibration messing up. I think that’s fixable though, either by messing with deadzones or actually taking the pedals apart and gluing them or something (there’s a guide for it online somewhere). Anyway, it’s a good wheel for the price.
