Thanks for the info =)
Also…
Did you know they sell cardboard “air guitars” at WalMart for twenty dollars.
I was very nonplussed.
I wonder if there is an equivalent of ProLine (pro picks, point spread) for Starcraft 2 tournaments.
The flag of Mozambique has an AK-47 on it. That’s fucked up, y’all.
“It’s like Lenin said, you look for the person who will benefit, and, uh…uh…you know?”
“I am the walrus?”
“Uh…uh…you know what I’m trying to say”
“I am the walrus”
“That fuckin’ bitch”
“I am the walrus”
“Shut the fuck up, Donny. VI Lenin. Vladimir Illyich Ulyanov”
Hard to tell if this fits better here or in the “I’m drunk” thread.
MIT Mystery Hunt (a puzzle hunt of epic scale) is over. Two and a half straight days of pure, unadulterated geekery and nerdiness, in fantastic company and lots of it.
Lost by around 20 minutes, in the end, which is the lowest amount we’ve lost by (the team with which I hunt, Manic Sages, a very large team of hilarious people). Twenty minutes! Not wasting four hours on this or that puzzle might have kept me fresh enough to catch the encoding for the third meta-answer in World 5, but oh well, it was hilarious.
As I had totally anticipated, there were (again) puzzles ranging across the entire breadth of knowledge both useful and useless, and I am now sleep-deprived, high on happiness and the company of geeks, and wistfully determined to do better next year.

Eh. Plenty of countries have swords. Mozambique just updated that to the 20th century.

I’ve done this the last couple of years, but didn’t this year because my normal D&D game fell on the same weekend.
We never come anywhere near finishing, let alone 20 minutes away from winning.
Kudos, sir! You have a big brain indeed!

I’ve a yearnin’ to see some lovely animated rain sequences. Has Miyazaki done anything with a lot of rain in it? Ponyo is all I can think of.
My Neighbor Totoro has rain.
There was rain in Princess Mononoke. Nice shot of it gently sweeping over a field, with the grass rustling and the rocks darkening with the water.

You should see Spirited Away. It might or might not have rain, but you should see it anyway.
The Lion King has a good one, right after the opening song. It’s short, but well done.

I have the sneaking suspicion I made a career-limiting comment to a senior manager today.

Seen it, and love it. I hate hate hate (as Ebert would say) anime in all forms, except Miyazaki. He is so skilled at what he does, and creates such beautiful images and stories. And Totoro is my favourite. (And yes, there is rain… of course. I should have known that).
Haven’t seen this one. People always recommend it to me, so it’s definitely worth a shot someday.
Seen it. It has the best supernatural images I’ve ever seen him do, but the story is just a bit… Oh, I don’t know. I’d give it a 7/10.
I’ve seen this only once, years ago, and I vaguely remember some nice rain. Last time I checked, I was unable to rent it from Lovefilm, but it’s definitely due another watch.
See, hong, not everyone wants to hear about Mass Effect 2 all the time.

If the snow isn’t giving me a snow day, I don’t want it!

In my five decades on this earth, that’s the first time I have ever seen or heard these five words placed together in the same sentence.* I don’t expect to ever read or hear them again, either. What a day today has turned out to be!
- Not that I understand what they mean, but still . . .
Okay, can air conditioning cause fan death?

South Korea is the world capitol of fan death, and here is the SK’s government official warning about fan death:
If bodies are exposed to electric fans or air conditioners for too long, it causes [the] bodies to lose water and [causes] hypothermia. If directly in contact with [air current from] a fan, this could lead to death from [an] increase of carbon dioxide saturation concentration [sic] and decrease of oxygen concentration. The risks are higher for the elderly and patients with respiratory problems. From 2003 [to] 2005, a total of 20 cases were reported through the CISS involving asphyxiations caused by leaving electric fans and air conditioners on while sleeping. To prevent asphyxiation, timers should be set, wind direction should be rotated and doors should be left open.
So follow these guidelines and you should be fine.
