I really feel like playing a flight sim. Specifically Microprose’s F117A. Looking at some random pics, it still looks pretty good.

Or just written down on a Post-It Note next to the monitor.

The monitor that Qt3 helped me select arrived! Hooray! The Blu-Ray quality is better than that on my old television! Double Hooray!

… the HMDI Cable is too thick for my Xbox. Boo.

Wait, what?

Not the cable itself, but the cable head. Y’know it needs to fit snug into the socket? Well, the stupid Xbox kinda has a ring of metal around the HDMI port that the plastic snags on, meaning I can’t push it all the way in.

Could I just file the head down a little at the sides?

Is there anything stopping me filing it down, actually? I mean, will I run into any key parts?

You should be fine as long as you don’t have to take much off. I think Microsoft did that to try and force people to buy some official HDMI cable, though most of the time any random one of the shelf will work.

I bought an Xbox recently and it had exactly that problem. It was a vaguely oval-shaped obstruction that prevented an HDMI plugin.

Looks roughly like this.

Leave C alone.
Pop off either A or B (IIRC it was B, the lower portion)
What I did is just use a knife along the border of A and B !!!, then use a flathead to pry open.

Wha? Those utter scumbags! They don’t own HDMI — where do they get off trying to turn it into a proprietary connector?

Ah. Actually, I’m afraid that my HDMI Port looks like this (apologies for iPhone camera quality):

There doesn’t seem to be anything that I can pop off here. Filing might be the better option.

EDIT: Man, that’s huge. Hold on, I’ll try and get a smaller pic.

EDIT II: Can’t. Sorry.

So my nephew has added three inspirational people to his profile on Facebook:

  1. Jesus Christ
  2. Thomas Monson (president of the Mormon Church)
  3. Batman

Yep. Kind of says it all.

I’m not sure if this is what Delta (and wisefool) are talking about, but there’s a common issue where the standard Xbox component cable blocks the HDMI port, so if you want to use HDMI for video and something else for audio, you can’t do it. I think they want you to buy the proprietary joint HDMI-optical audio out cable.

The solution to that is to pop the plastic casing off of the component-cable housing thing, so that just the metal part that actually plugs in is left. Then you can squueze the HDMI cable into there. It looks a little precarious, but it works fine.

All right. I’ll try that. Let’s hope we can put this to rest once and for all - You’ve been very helpful.

Re-reading your problem, it’s probably not what I was talking about, since you didn’t mention the audio connector…

If you have a fancy HDMI cable with a big “grip” on it, I could see it not seating fully. I’d probably just recommend picking up a couple cheap bare-bones HDMI cables from somewhere like monoprice (or UK equivalent), they should work fine.

This thread has turned into a specific topic thread. Back to the random!

I’m glad my parents are too old to procreate.

Back to HDMI cable discussion!

Who doesn’t remember that short-lived Batman & Moroni story arc?

Yeah, buy an Amazon HDMI cable, that’s what I have on mine (Same Xbox, cept mine’s Reach branded), and it works fine. When I was running a 5.1 system as well, I had to pop off the plastic covering of my proprietary cable to get it to fit snugly with the HDMI, and even then it sort of tilted.

Fucking Microsoft.
