Underwear. You must choose underwear. For bras, that means one that isn’t visible under the dress. This might mean strapless (annoying) or no bra at all (unsupportive and inducing of self-consciousness). Underwear! You do not want panty lines under your skirt. That means thongs (uncomfortable), special no-line underwear or nothing (again, worrisome).

Absolute nonsense. Having a visible bra strap (or panty line, the “y” of a thong with low-rise pants, or the bra cup with a deep V-neck combo) can be a perfectly acceptable part of an outfit.

Shoes. Women’s shoes are evil. I’m aware men’s dress shoes can be mighty uncomfortable, but let’s face it, you get one good pair and you’re pretty much set. If you limit yourself to a little black dress, you can get away with one pair of shoes (probably also black). Good luck finding ones that are comfortable. Do you want heels? How high? What about flats? Are those dressy enough?

There are plenty of fine dressy flats nowadays, and for heels, a pair of sandals can be mighty comfortable. But I’m probably the wrong person to ask, as my SO finds heels more comfortable than flats.

Accessories. Again, not something you have to do, but helpful… probably like picking a good tie for the suit.

Neckties emphasize the wrong things on a woman’s body. It’s the wrong shape for that form, no matter how butch she is.

Weather. Suits are hot, you say? Dresses are cool. If you want to wear something over your dress for warmth, again, good luck finding something that a) matches, b) provides some kind of warmth, and c) is dressy enough.

Leather, same length as the dress. Easy enough.

Next time you go shopping, I’ll tag along and get you all set up.

Hell, they’re not even hassles, they’re fun. Women get to do all kinds of interesting things in the outfit department that men never get to do. And it’s fun for me, too, to go with my wife and watch her try on different things. It helps that I actually have an eye for things that would look good on her that she wouldn’t consider otherwise. And then the reward for that is getting to see her wear them. I get to hang out in the Man Chair the store has set up just for that purpose while she comes out, spins around, looks marvelous, and we get to chat about colors and styles and cuts and all sorts of things.

My wife just finished shopping for a new dress for the Kansas City Zoo’s big event this year, and yeah, there is a lot that goes into it! It took about four different dresses and a few different sizes to get everything sorted out. Fortunately, she hates to shop, so this all happened with online shopping and free returns. (Neither one of us is getting anything super high quality for this.)

Only four? You got off easy. When we were getting ready for the Eli premiere, I started shopping in OCTOBER. The premiere? January. Just the shoes took half a dozen stores and three returns and I still ended up walking around the after party in stockinged feet because the winning pair was f-ing uncomfortable.

I also hate shopping. There were nearly tears in the middle of Bloomingdales.

I’m not sure where you got the idea that womens clothes don’t require special care or storage. My dress clothes need special hangers and garment bags.

Womens clothes also tend to be more fitted so a very small fluctuation in weight can mean a whole new outfit. Hell, I can’t even fit my boobs into my favorite dress the week before my period and the rest of me is the same size then. One shopping trip doesn’t mean you’re set for all of your events for the next year.

Sadly, I’m the same with things like weddings and parties too ;) It’s the price of being a tomboy the rest of the time - nothing to build on.
