Ravi Shankar has passed away

Ahhhh, that takes me way back to the Monterey Pop Festival and Woodstock. A legend.

When Philip Glass was studying in Paris, he took a job for the Film “Chappaqua” for which Ravi Shankar added the music. Glass should write down Shankars music on paper, so that Western musicians could play it… That was the moment in time, when Glass was introduced to patterns and rhythmic structures. I would say working with Shankar was the defining event for Glass musical development.

I saw “Rabbi Shanker”, as we used to call him, twice - at the benefit for Bangladesh and again at the Schaeffer Music Festival in Central Park. He was brilliant both times.

I saw him perform once and loved it. I feel sad for his daughter Norah Jones.
