If you’re worried about it, put a checkbox/option on the launcher to bypass it. That adds discoverability and allows you to educate users what the purpose of the launcher is at one time.
“Bypass Launcher: Note that this will disable cloud saves”
Problem is, it WON’T disable cloud saves. It’s muddy. Cloud saves are handled by the launcher, not by the launcher check. So you could launch it with the launcher up or from the Epic shortcut and it WOULD do cloud saves. It just wouldn’t if you launched the exe directly.
And the GAME launcher ALSO needs to do the EPIC launcher check, because it syncs then.
Anyway, there’s lots of potential points of failure that make it hard to have a single ‘oh yes, do this’ checkbox. Alas.
I think I dread the ‘my cloud saves didn’t work’ tech support more than I do the ‘I copied this to another drive and it didn’t run, oh just use that shortcut? ok’ tech support.

Oh, I see! Yes, that’s a little more tricky. Honestly, I think the launcher is fine. I’d go with whatever allows for the most reliable cloud saves. That’s a far more important issue than some whiners that can be countered with documentation.
The audience is probably fine with your solution. The main audience is enthusiastic and likely to learn it quickly and spread it around to those who don’t know how accessible it is.
Otherwise, I don’t know if you could have a launcher that hooks into the store and a game executable that can get it from there or not. But it’s probably not worth it.
Another vote for “make cloud saves default”. It’s not going to make a lick of difference how you do it to anyone who is still on the anti-EGS crusade, and it improves QoL for the majority, and as you said it’s easy enough to direct people on how to run it without the launcher if they like (maybe include it in a readme file as well?).
I never use cloud saves because I am someone who can copy files. So fine by me!
Sounds perfect to me. Creating a shortcut with the commandline argument requires some finesse and I find it very hard to have anyone doing that without being aware of the caveat. As long as it’s documented somewhere - with the cloud save issue conveniently emphasized - I think it’s the ideal solution.
EDIT: though I suppose renaming the argument to -noEpicLauncher or -i-am-free or -noCloudSaves or -standalone would probably be a better fit. ;)
To be safe you need to make sure it is spelled in big bright letters. Because the internet hate mob will like on with “They Promised DRM free from the epic store and it isn’t!!!” Even if that might be technically wrong. People are idiots. Is there a way to make it an installer Info or something?
Yup. The Resetera will be 8 pages of shitposting before anyone checks to see if it’s even true, and then the person who points that out will get banned for “trolling”.
Wait, I thought the Epic Games Store didn’t do cloud saves, which is why I lost all my progress in World War Z. Grrr! So much bad information going around!

It’s a very recent addition.
We are on the bleeding edge here!

I was hyped for this but epic store exclusive bummed me out.
They just added it for a couple of games in the last week or two.
Rolling out for other games as epic get around to them.

I would do anything for RGO, but I won’t do that. Well…maybe a little.
ObsidianAnt is streaming it now.
I think @BrianRubin is streaming tonight, I hope to make it home in time to watch live.
On a slightly tangential note, anyone have recommendations on a good PC gamepad? I’ve never been a gamepad-on-PC person but I don’t feel like digging the full HOTAS setup out of the closet just for Rebel Galaxy Outlaw. Since my PS4 controllers are all tied up for my PS4 and I’ve purged all my previous-generation console stuff, I’m looking at needing to purchase a gamepad for my main gaming PC prior to the 13th.
