I’d argue that has gone away with IL2. There’s a lot of SP meat on its bones.
IL 2 is for me the best flight sim in market. Its playable for my preferred level of detail I find DCS to be overwhelming (which is fine, DCS is a great sim of course) but IL2 I can hop in and start bombing or shooting fools quickly. Also amazing in VR second only to Elite for me.
Rod, Flying Circus (ww1 Il-2) is on sale. It surpasses Elite as a VR experience. I shit thee not.
(@scharmers used to dump on Russian flight sims like Il-2 and DCS something fierce for choosing perceived realism over gameplay. Not quite without merit, that argument, I must admit.
OMG! Thank you! Grabbing!!! Also grabbing Tank Crew, because, Tanks :)
wow il2 1946 for $2.50! thanks dennya and schurem!
is not the Il-2 me and Rod were talking about. It’s old school Il-2 so to speak. It’s been heavily modded and is really easy on the hardware, so not a bad buy at all, especially for 2.5 buckazoids.

Yeah, the $2.50 sim is a lot of fun and crazy worth it — there are mods that add Korean jets and dozens of additional planes on top of the already crowded library of aircraft. But it’s the most recent version of the sim that came out in 2001 — it’s fun but dated.
The new IL-2 series has a modern engine, full VR support, and much better AI, flight modeling, etc. It’s a series of modular sims that can all work together, but they also stand alone. If you’re looking for a bomber experience, you could start with Battle of Kuban, which has the Douglas A-20 Havoc, a twin-engine light bomber and the Heineken He-111 on the bad guys’ side. It’s only $19.95 on the current sale.

Just put my “goodbye” cover from when I left CGW to become editor of CGM up on the wall behind my garage workbench…

The problem with Flying Circus, from what I can see, is that there isn’t a singleplayer campaign or anything. Are you only able to fly the planes in the quick mission system? Do you know if they’re adding a campaign later?
In other news, IL-2: Battle of Bodenplatte is on a good sale, and looks really good. I really want to try the ME 262!

My understanding is they plan to add one if it does enough business, which for me is a Catch-22 that makes it doomed to not happen, since I’m sure as hell not buying it on that fart and a prayer, but I definitely would if they added one.
They already did mate. Check the store page. Two long scripted campaigns.

Oh? The site store doesn’t seem to mention anything, and the steam page only lists “scripted campaign support”, whatever that means. A steam review mentions that the community has made two scripted campaigns, is that what you mean?
Yes, they were polished and added in as a part of the game. They’ll provide about twelve hours of gameplay per side. I say fairly serviceable. You can’t say the game is devoid of any SP content.

Seems wacky that they can’t easily put in the kind of career mode Il-2 has, considering it’s the same engine and everything.

They must have had their reasons.

Long-term investment opportunity, is what I call it! /eyeroll
