I like War Thunder* because I can dogfight using keyboard and a mouse balanced on the arm of my sofa.
*Grind aside. Which can be slightly avoided if you don’t care about high tiers.

Yes you can play with mouse and kb very easily and the flight model, even on arcade, still offers complexity with the amount of planes you have!

A quick bump because @Editer and I both have new VR sets within (hopefully) 60 days.
Besides IL2, Scharmers drooling about DCS sounds like that is a must try. Anything new on the horizon?

VTOL VR.
DCS is free to try. Just install it and you are good to go with one map and two fairly crappy planes.
Il2 is running a sale at this moment, so get your spinny bit on!

Yah. Me too. Got one on preorder from bestware.de.
Still on, but it only covers campaigns and collector planes not any of the games.

Oh, interesting. Think I have all the campaigns for the games I have, but I should double check.

Yessir. Can’t wait for it either.
Let us know how they pan out. I’m holding off at least until I upgrade my PC, and possibly to see what the Quest 2 is like, but they certainly sound pretty cool from the previews and it’s about time to upgrade my Rift CV1.
Speaking of upcoming sims, ED is about to release their A-10C II module. This would be a perfect point to jump in. Their original A-10C module is brilliant The sequel will be built on the original, so there is reasonable expectation that it will be mostly complete and bug-free. Maybe.
The original is great fun, especially in VR. You can load up with a huge quantity and variety of weapons, and that gun! They did a great job with it too.

Excellent recommendation! I’ll check it out. That’s a full on add-on to DCS or a standalone itself?
It’s an add-on, or module.
The base game is free. That comes with Caucuses terrain, which is great. From there, you can expand as you wish. Helo’s, props, jets and other locations.
New Warthog should keep you busy for quite awhile though. DCS jets are super detailed with plenty of depth to keep you busy for years.

Of course someone named @skipper will prefer to fly navy. So the F/A-18 is the module to get for him ;)
But first just install the base thing and see how it gives with you. DCS has some assists but they are badly undercooked. Do not bother with them, just enjoy the myriad interesting ways you can crash a Soviet Su-25 or unarmed mustang.
Once you get a feel for the sim, thinking “yes sir, this is the shit for me!” should you start eying their site for a sale on the hornet or hog. Or mirage, that one’s fun too. Or maybe one of the MiGs?

I feel the need, the need, for SPEED. (Yes I know those were Tomcats, but still.) Yes, Skipper would prefer a naval flight sim, carrier landings and all. That VTOL recommendation looked like it included it?

Yes VTOL VR is a classic sim lite game played with VR controllers instead of a HOTAS. It has naval stuff.
DCS has naval stuff as well. You can spend money on a carrier that includes a voiced LSO (done by Jell-O of fighter pilot podcast fame) and deck handlers that help with launch. They also have a third party module of the F-14 that is well and truly excellent. Not an easy plane, mind you!

Pimpin’ aint easy.
Jokes aside, I plan on some horrible but fun failures when the new headset arrives.

Mastering the mighty turkeybird is one of the greatest Joy’s in simming though. The DCS version is the -B, with the right engines. They do intend to add the -A for free later for owners of the tomcat, but for now, engine stalls and lack of thrust are not a problem.
Well-flown, the F-14B will dominate against all comers, including the viper. A pilot who knows his Turkey well will crush Hornets like the plastic bugs they are. You do need to grow a moustache for that though.
Interesting aerodynamics are. As is an interesting control system. And gloriously 1970s avionics. None of that G1000 glass cockpit malarky here sir! We have some really cool and high tech looking tape gauges, ooh yeah!
So the question I have is this: DCS via Steam or direct?
