Recent air combat sim recommendations?

It’s a two-step process:

  1. You install the XP mode. This does NOTHING but install a VHD containing XP on your hard drive.
  2. You then install the Windows Virtual PC (download should be on the same page). It is preconfigured to run the VHD you installed early.
  3. After all this is done, you should be able to just launch XP mode from the start window by typing in “XP” and letting search do the rest.
  4. If all else fails, let me know, and I will zip up the 3dfx folder containing the extracted game files and put them… somewhere.

OOHHHHHHHHHHH, I didn’t realize I had to install both of those things, silly me. No idea how I missed that. Thanks!

Other than video gaming merchandises, Tommo manufactures and distributes an exclusive private line of products and NBA licensed casino-quality poker chips.

Dafuq?!

Holllllllly sheeeeit

I got EF2000 Reloaded working! I’ve missed it so! It looks and sounds great, now I just need to reread the manual and the amazing strategy guide.

Awesome. EF2K is a sim for the ages.

I found I don’t have a copy of the manual!!?!?! AAAHHHH

Ugh. It was hardcopy in that little 2.0 box; hopefully SOMEBODY has torn theirs apart and scanned it :/

I couldn’t find a PDF of the whole manual, but I did find a PDF of the key commands at least.

Need some flight sim recommendations for my dad. I just bought him a cheap W8.1 i3 8GB with a decent 2GB graphics card and a joystick. It’s not much, but better than his 10 year old Gateway that barely works. I’m bringing it to him this weekend and I’m going to surprise him by loading a bunch of games on it. He’s semi computer literate and a huge historical buff (he’s an antique weapons dealer).

He always makes comments about wanting to play flight sims, but hasn’t really ever played anything. I don’t think he can handle any war RTS. The micromanagement would drive him nuts.

Here’s what I have so far:

Rise of Flight Channel Edition
IL-2 1946 (Steam)
Dogfight 1942 (Steam, but no joystick support)

Any other suggestions? I was thinking maybe one of the online sims (Warthunder or WoWP). Haven’t tried either though. Maybe also Battle of Britain on Steam.

War Thunder because it has a significant SP component.

The Strike Fighters 2 series.

I think that RoF & IL-2: 1946 are awfully hard core to start with.

I second the strike fighters recomendation. It does need significant tweakage and some after-sales modding to really shine though so you may want to look into that a little.

Strike Fighters is frequently on my radar. It looks like a fun, lightweight jet sim. A friend and I might DLC it up and write dueling AARs of the mercenary campaign thing sometime later this year.

Its fun and indeed pretty lightweight. its also pretty (one of the first sims including self-shadowing!) and there are some mods out (nato fighters) that put it right in old janes’ USNF “everything including the ktichen sink” territory.

Is this Strike Fighters 2 from Thirdwire?

Seems pricey for an older game but maybe I’ll check it out.

yep that’s the one. and yea it isnt cheap but its the only thing there is in what it does. comes in several flavors such as 'nam, early 60s, 80s, etc. You can merge them together, so you can use your 'nam era F-4E in Iceland or buy a tomcat ina merc campaign. over the year i caught 'em all ;-)

RoF is definately not too hardcore. It’s about as easy as you want it to be. Quick mission is very easy to set up, point your guns and shoot.

War thunder’s SP isn’t great, and a lot of it is locked by default, and the AI and missions don’t seem very balanced in a good way, but the engine is slick and it runs really well. Might be worth playing Birds of Prey if he doesn’t mind playing the arcade settings to ease him in, then graduate him to IL2:BoB. Bet he’d like FSX with some nice scenery packs to tool around in too.

So this got Greenlit today

Called Aircraft Guide. It looks something akin to Jane’s Fighters Anthology but played on a random strategic map where you also protect cities, build factories, research better aircraft and so on. Love the idea at least.

had potential but a looooong way to go
