There’s a really good campaign for the Su-25A (challenging, atmospheric, good briefings, busy missions), which is the only one I have serious experience with. I’ve played a little bit of the A-10A and Su-33 campaigns, both of which are decent, but not quite up to the same standard. (The Su-33 is a little better than the A-10A.) The Su-27 and F-15 also have campaigns which I haven’t tried. There’s also a reasonable selection of F-15 missions on the forums.

Hhmmnmmmmmmmmmmmmmm…might have to pick it up then. Thanks man!

So wait, I just read that one needs a copy of Lock On: Modern Air Combat to access all of the content in Flaming Cliffs 3? Is this true?!

Okay, whew, it looks like that’s been removed, I think. I’m also tempted by that Huey…arg…

Why did I watch that Huey video? Now I want that as well!

Jeff, superb posts. I wish I had a computer magazine I could buy them for. The Witcher walkthrough was fantastic!

Annoying as switchology is, I ordered an Oculus Rift devkit for DCS and IL-2… :)

I’m going to do a better writeup on the DCS Huey one of these days. I find I like it a lot: simple, hard to fly, forced me to learn radio navigation. :P

The DCS direct purchased stuff and Steam purchased stuff is still not interchangeable is it? Did they fix that?

No, they are not. Which I found out the hard way when I bought Flaming Cliffs 3 from their site and tried to use it on the Steam client.

They were for a while, but Steam stopped doing key merges. I’m pretty sure that things you buy from Steam can be activated in the standalone client, but not the other way around.

Also, the MiG-21 released today, so I spent a few minutes before work climbing to 10,000 meters and descending to the deck. Good times. I wasn’t even using the fancy double-afterburner.

A video of a user compensating on flying with his Oculus Rift dev kit 2 in DCS World. Looks like we’re almost there with VR headsets. It only took 20+ years.

I’m struggling with dcs a-10 and the saitek x55’s.

It’s refusing to map keys/axes cleanly. By default it’s all fucked in terms of duplicate axes binded. I tried the pre-made profiles from the forums, and the lua files they include do absolutely nothing.

Any suggestions? I know they’re crappy sticks, but they shouldn’t be that crappy…

Wait a minute. Am I supposed to upgrade to the dcs-world modules for all the planes now? Is that the newest stuff?

Also if I burn an activation, how do I reset when I switch to a new machine?

Missing link?

Doh!

He also has some mig 21 vids up.

Wouldnt it be great if they increased the res near the center of the display. that way we dont waste gpu power on peripheral vision where just a smudge moving would be enough to let us know there’s a bogey creepin in on our six.

Either way. I. Cant. Fucking. WAIT. to get my mitts on the consumer version of the rift and get flyin’.

If you’re on standalone DCS A-10C, newer profiles won’t work. The controls mapping file format changed not long ago so that it can handle patch transitions better. And DCS default key mappings have always been the worst sort of useless garbage.

Yup, everything plugs into DCS World now. If you’re not top-end in terms of your machine, it might behoove you to wait until the new graphics engine is released later this year—the 1.2.x series of patches introduced a lot of things to bog PCs down.

You reset by either holding down shift while launching a mission (I think), or by finding a file called <airplane name>_protect in the install directory, then following the prompts to deactivate. Also, just uninstalling the game ought to refund you one activation. Even if it doesn’t, once you use the original ten, you get a new one every two weeks or so, IIRC.

Yeah, Bunyap’s Fishbed videos have been pretty nifty overall. I’m really looking forward to my 3D/VR solution, although CastAR’s been a little slower to get their stuff together. Not long now, I hope.

Some MiG-21 screenshots. Still getting to grips with it. I’m, uh, 2/5 on landings sans explosion right now.

nice one fishbreath. managed to do air to air with it already?

i tried getting back into DCS, but the horror of the control assignment spreadsheet made me bounce off it like an 88mm off an angled armor plate. guess i’ve joined the legion of spoiled brats who cant be arsed to fiddle with settings for hours in order to get it all just right. or perhaps i just havent found the energy to do so just yet.
