Recommend me 70s movies

Is he chasing him to prevent the death of innocents, or to catch him for arrest and/or questioning?

I haven’t seen FC in ages but I assumed it was the latter.

I’m not sure “catching” is the right word, since he wound up shooting him.french

Well, Popeyes gonna Popeye.

I haven’t actually seen the film (or, apparently, its poster) in ages.

IIRC, doesn’t Popeye get turned into a Junkie in FC2?

Never saw it, but could be.

Friends of Eddie Coyle is IMO an underappreciated classic. Decades before The Departed or Black Mass and a better film than both.

Yes, but he kicks it cold turkey. Not pleasant.

Friends of Eddie Coyle above made me think of The Killing of a Chinese Bookie. d.-Cassavettes,; with Gazarra and Cassel. Star Trek reference: the Mob Boss is played by Captain Tracey of The Omega Glory and Dr. Simon van Gelder of Dagger of the Mind, respectively. Namely, Morgan Woodward.

I imagine you already know this, but the producers of The French Connection didn’t get permission to shoot that chase scene, so the streets weren’t closed or cleared for them. There’s a moment in there where a woman is pushing a stroller across the street and is nearly creamed by one of the cars. I gather that’s real; that was a normal pedestrian shocked and terrified to have a car roaring up on her and her baby.

A major Hollywood production didn’t get permits to shoot a big chase scene? That’s nuts. I have to admit I’m skeptical.

It’s well documented.

On the sequences filmed in the street, Friedkin claimed, “[Stunt driver] Bill Hickman [who also had a role in the film] drove 26 blocks at 90 mph. … The only thing staged was [when Doyle’s car narrowly avoids a collision with] the woman and baby.”

He added that the production was “very lucky” that nobody was hurt. “I wouldn’t do anything like this today,” said the helmer.

So I guess the bit that I seized on is staged. Thank goodness for that.

Heh. I figure I’ll watch the ones on Hulu, then Netflix. And keep the rest around for a wishlist for down the road.

Uh where’s my recommendation?

Added. Better than The Departed? That sounds awesome.

Didn’t someone earlier mention The Conversation? Why isn’t it on your list?

It is, but it looks like I misspelled, which I’ll correct. Thanks.

Also, I’ve seen the first 5 minutes of The Conversation during film appreciation class. I’ve never forgotten it. I really do need to see the whole thing.
