I’m sure this has been mentioned before, but GMT has also confirmed an iOS version of Dominant Species. It’s a wonderful time to be a board gamer.

Imperial is an awesome face to face experience that I’m not sure will translate well to the iPad, especially in single player form. I also have no idea how they’d make a competent AI for it, and see it has none at all at the moment. It’s an interesting release, that’s for sure. Thanks for pointing it out.

Apparently it’s really really bad. So I will be passing.

Dreadfleet is in the house. I’m super excited about playing it in 2015! Everything in that box (and the box itself) are top quality, as expected. The models look fantastic (I haven’t put them together yet, but they still look great on the grids) and the playing surface really makes me wish I had the painting skill to do these pieces justice. I’m jealous of the dudes who are going to play a lot of this with a well painted set.

So I spent some time reading the rulebook. It is beautiful and really well written. As LK mentioned, Dreadfleet is definitely a wargame but the book does such a great job of explaining all of the concepts and de-intimidafying it that I’m really interested in trying the game out. There’s no grid, ships are moved by measuring out your travel distance and moving the ships around. Also, since these ships are supposed to be massive (one has a friggin’ castle on it) they can’t just turn from a standstill, you need to move a certain distance before changing course. But there’s also a rule that once you move a ship it’s moved, no take backs. I actually kind of love that, I could really see geeking out on planning a course, measuring it out and hoping I put myself close enough to fire on an enemy ship. Looks like lots of fun.

Here’s a tip from BGG for anyone who’s thinking of picking this up and getting their arts and crafts on: you should also pick up a copy of this month’s White Dwarf magazine. They’ve got a huge 50+ page section about painting all of the major components and a couple of sample playthroughs. I’m going to check my FLGS to see if they’ve got a copy this week but if not I’ll order it from the GW website.

Those rules sound a lot like Battlefleet Gothic.

Does anyone know of a good e-mail based board game… I’m looking to do something with a few friends. Sort of a once-a-day-get-on-the-website-and-make-your-move type of thing. Any recommendations?

Any recomendations for good single player board/card games. I am going to be away 2 nights a week for the next 3 months or so and it would be fun to have something I can play solo, considering bringing my consoles is not really an option (I have my PC, but it’s not really a gaming laptop so my options from Steam are kinda limited). Preferably something that is reasonably portable and with minimal setup time (AH is waaay too much). I have Death Angel, which isn’t bad SP, but I would like another option.

There are quite a few solitaire war games. I really recommend Hornet Leader: Carrier Operations. I also think Fields of Fire is a fantastic game, but the rules can be REALLY tough to wrap your head around. I have been dying to play Ambush!, but haven’t made the eBay plunge quite yet.

Race for the Galaxy + Gathering Storm (although your laptop should play the PC version posted earlier in this thread just fine. There’s also a PC version of Dominion posted earlier that should work fine on pretty much any PC. And there’s gog.com for older games that will also run on anemic laptops.)

… and, I’ve heard good things about the Zed Deck: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/94916/zed-deck

Elder Sign! It’s like if you really liked Arkham but also sort of wanted to play Yahtzee. In a good way, though.

Not a boardgame, but GloriousMess is playing GalaxyNG at the moment and enjoying it. You could also try Solium Infernum. Neither of these are web-based though. Isn’t there erm Neptune’s Revenge or something like that, a web-based space boardgamey style thing?

The only one I’ve played more than once to completion is Solium Infernum. If you decide to go that route be sure and start a thread about it or resurrect one, as there are some subtleties to the game’s rules that can easily turn into keyboard flippers and it’s best to head them off from the start.

In addition to those already suggested, you might want to check out what Victory Point Games has to offer.

I haven’t played any of their stuff, but I know a fair number of boardgamers who love their solo games. In particular, Nemo’s War (Captain Nemo against the navies of 19th century colonial powers), Circus Train (Water For Elephants: the boardgame), and Disaster on Everest have gotten high marks. The caveat is that their stuff is all desktop production, so component quality is not great relative to the big name companies.

The local who was potentially going to buy some of my games has declared a financial crisis, so here’s a link to my my preliminary spreadsheet. If an admin sees this and wants me to remove it PM me and I’ll do so, and I ask that anyone else PM me with requests or questions so as not to shit up this most excellent thread. I’d prefer to sell multiples to individuals for shipping reasons (it’s easier for me and cheaper for you), but we’ll see…

Any one tried / own Gears of War? I’m curious to check out some opinions.

A couple of my Kickstarter (Kickstarted?) games arrived, Get Bit and Eaten By Zombies. Haven’t had a chance to pop them out of the plastic yet.

I finally got Eminent Domain, and Eaten By Zombies is supposed to arrive soon.

If anyone else gets ED, check the box carefully. There’s a secret promo in there that isn’t taped to the box and is easy to throw away by accident.

Having missed the Kickstarter I get the feeling that I won’t be able to get the Glory to Rome Black Box edition. I go to two local places, both of which are mentioned on Cambridge Game Factory’s website as being supporters and one of which is actually called their flagship store. Neither has ever heard of this new product, neither know if they’re getting any in. I write to Cambridge Game Factory and they suggest I try the two places that I just mentioned.

It’s enough to make me yearn for the GameStop system.

I thought it was going into general production once the Kickstarter was over.

Unless something new has popped up the last I heard it’s a limited print run with enough made over and above the Kickstarter promised units that most stores will be able to pick up a few copies to sell. They don’t even plan on selling it on their own website. Though it’s now being advertised on their website, so maybe the plans did change. If so, yay. If not, aw.

There are no rules against it on QT3 any more. :)
