Dreadfleet owners, this could come in handy to keep your ships safe:

If I get them painted, I’ll definitely want something like that.

I saw this up on kickstarter- the miskatonic school for girls deck building game. I’m a sucker for deck builders and things Lovecraftian so it was an immediate pledge. The art and setting are pretty cute.

I get mildly excited and the realize that at its core, it’s still just Risk.

So… Risk Legacy, All hype or is this game going to be cool? I like the idea of a game that will be different based on what happens in other games, but sounds more gimmicky than practical. I guess it’s all dependent on how many plays the game actually gets and how long it takes to play.

The Imperial app has been updated and is supposed to work now. I’m not really interested in it though.

Yeah, that is not an iOS experience I’m interested in at all.

Has anyone played the followup release. 2030 or 2040 or whatever it was? I’ve heard it’s superior to the original, which I like a lot.

I’ll wait to see what it looks like when everything is assembled, because I’m hoping that simply adding dividers made out of cardboard (with stylish black duct tape!) keeps everything from moving around once I ziploc them in with some air. It worked pretty well for Space Hulk, where I discarded the idea of foam because that stuff is really expensive. <20$ I would consider it, but damn.

Fuck Battlefoam. The company takes forever to ship you anything, and it’s not even particularly good foam.

That’s good to know. Thanks LK and Frank. Stylish duct tape, cardboard and ziplocs it is then. :)

That deck building kickstarter sounds like my kind of game. I’ll go have a look.

I love my battlefoam 720 bag :)

Not sure which one you mean, but I just got Eminent Domain and Eaten By Zombies in the mail as well, so deckpocalypse is upon me. Both have really professional production values, although I have no idea about the actual feel of the cards over time but they look really good.

I meant the miskatonic school for girls deck building game. which was mentioned above.

I’m not totally sure about Eaten by zombies yet. Sounds like it could be fun though. I’ll be looking forward to reading how you like it.

Miskatonic looks like a cute theme with fun art, but the game itself sounds crazy simplistic and the deckbuilding looks to have all the randomness of Ascension (which Dominion die-hards don’t seem to like all that much) but without cards that allow for interesting combinations. Maybe they’re in there, but they aren’t any of the ones they decided to show us. Hopefully some of the followup videos will give a better idea of how it plays.

And man, I know it’s a Kickstarter, but their pricing structure could use some work. $45 for the game? GtR:BB got you the game for $25 and it was a game where everyone knew the rules already so had an idea if it was any good. The jump from $9 to $45 seems a little extreme anyway. They look like they’re going to make their goal, so what do I know, but I gotta think there are a lot of philanthropists who’re like ‘sure, I’ll toss twenty bu- forty five? Naw.’

(Also, something LK said to me the other day just hit home. One of Tom Vassel’s knocks on Ascension was that the card artwork was too scary. What?)

Tom Vassel has like 6 kids, he seems to be a bit down on anything that is a bit “scary” for them.

Bunches of stuff! I could have made a better list last week, but some questions I remember off of the top of my head:

  • Does Kate’s ability prevent monsters from spawning at midnight due to mythos cards? You would think, since the game clearly states that advancing the clock and playing a mythos card is part of the player turn, that the answer would be yes. Richard Launius says no, however. Although, since there is no official FFG FAQ yet you can pretend you didn’t hear him if you want.

  • Are there any restrictions as to where monsters should be placed when there are no empty monster spawn locations? Technically, no. However, this gives the players a really easy out because you can just pick one adventure card as the monster dump and pile them all up there. My house rule is that extra monster tokens have to be distributed evenly (no spot can have more than one until they all have one). This is slightly anti-Arkham (since you are allowed to dump monsters on a gate there) but since monsters don’t move in Elder Sign it makes more sense.

  • How often can Amanda use her re-roll ability? In Arkham it’s once per turn. ES also says once per turn, but turns in Arkham are simultaneous so it’s really once per simultaneous player turn. If you go by what’s printed on the character sheet in ES you’re getting a reroll for every character in the game. Which may be fine, although Richard says it should really be once per day (resetting at midnight). Again, not official, but I kinda feel like once per turn is broken. This point may not really be a failure of the rulebook if their real intention was that you can reroll 2 dice for every character every turn.

  • I’d like a clarification on how spells work. The way the rulebook is written you must place a die on a spell card after your roll, even if you don’t have anything worth saving. I’m wondering if you are allowed to then immediately “use” that die to get it off of the card or if you’re forced to take your next roll short a die. If that’s the case then it’s possible for spells to work against you, which I’m fine with, but you’d think they would have given an example or something in the book. Also, if you use a spell and get a terrible roll, can you use a clue token before deciding what goes on the spell or an investigator ability to change a result? It seems like the rules say no but there’s really no clarification on what overrides what.

  • Say the red die is locked on an adventure card and a monster comes up with the red lock on it. If someone completes the adventure card does the red die free up or does it move to the monster lock. I believe the rules say that the dice only move to a lock when one appears, but it really seems like it should be the other way around. This is one of many questionable scenarios that the rulebook doesn’t even bother to mention.

Um, I forget the rest. Anyway, I really like the game so I’ve got my own answers to all of these questions that I’ve been playing with (I almost always go with whatever makes the game harder because, as written, the game is a bit too easy). Hopefully we’ll get a solid FAQ with the inevitable expansion (that I will buy instantly, natch).

I think he’s also a Christian pastor. I believe that has factored in (obliquely) to his comments on other games with certain art and components that have frightening or demonic natures (e.g. Chaos in the Old World).

Dwarfstar Games free to download. Get out the cardboard, glue and scissors.

This plays best on a PC/iPad so you don’t have to print out all those PDFs. Which makes me think I should try to play the Dr. Who Story Game on my iPad sometime.

I see a review of Ubongo for iPad is up at BGG. Seems like a decent fit for the platform.

Grav Armor and Dragon Rage were both pretty good, as I recall.

My understanding is that he is or was a Christian missionary in addition to that, so if anything I give him a great deal of credit for being as broad in his tastes and up-front in his prejudices as he is. He really gets that no matter what it’s just a game and he owes it to the people that worked on it to make a review that stands up to scrutiny, and he can maintain that even when it pushes his buttons.
