So any QT3ers in the Boston area know of any local mercenary miniature painters? I picked up Mansions of Madness thinking I could live with unpainted minis but looking at these ugly gray lumps is almost enough to have me thinking of trying my hand. Except if I did that then they’d end up ugly, blotchy pink and brown lumps.

Sounds about right, for the monsters anyway. :D

Has anyone put time into the Blood Bowl Team Manager game? I think Bill Abner mentioned it (very positively) on Jumping the Shark, but I’d be interested to see what people think. Is it any good 2-player?

Go to Pandemonium, look on the bulletin boards there. If there’s nothing on the boards, then ask the nerds behind the counter. If they don’t know, ask them if they would host a mini painting class as an idea for the store. I’d sign up for that if it’s reasonably priced.

Funny you should ask about Blood Bowl- I picked it up Tuesday, and immediately read the rules and played a couple 2-player games.

I liked it. 2-player seemed pretty strategic, and each game was pretty different given the different team matchups and events that come out. It really is more of a hand-management game than a deck-building game, though there are some elements of that. For example, in the second game (me as the Orcs Vs. my friend Jon playing Chaos), I noticed that neither team seemed to really be paying much attention to the ballin the first round, so whenever the choice came to choose a star player (pretty muchhow you draft cards), I picked ones with the passing ability, knowing my opponent wouldn’t be doing much to counter it. In short, I turned my bruiser Orc team into a passing-centric team, and ended up winning the game because of in (despite all those dirty Chaos tricks!).

A couple more peeps showed up around then, and we started a 4-player game. I had to leave after round three, though. It seemed a bit more chaotic, but still fun. I left my copy for them to finish the game though- I’m curious to know how it all ended.

Reldan showed me how to play it, and I’m pretty convinced that it captures a portable, abstracted version of the game in a really interesting format. I haven’t done two player, but it was pretty fun with 4.

I didn’t even think of that. I generally associate the board at Pandemonium with fifty posts that say ‘player looking for (enter popular game) group’ and then one guy looking to run a game of some obscure thing. If only those 4.0 and Pathfinder players would learn the system for Ray Winninger’s Underground or For Faerie, Queen and Country they’d be set!

Heck, it might even be worthwhile just to toss up a post on the board myself. Looking for rudimentary paintjob. Will pay in sessions of Adventure! or The Whispering Vault.

Whoa. Underground and the Whispering Vault mentioned in the same post. You’re my new hero.

I was jut talking with a friend last week that you really wouldn’t have to change much (if any) of the satire in Underground to update it. In fact most of it is still way too relevant. I’ve always wanted to run a game of that, but christ, how do you measure up to the standard set in even the original rulebook. I’m not worthy.

I finally put together a replacement package for my botched copy of Star Trek: Fleet Captains, and including the ships that had misglued nacelles and other cosmetic damage I had eight in there. Got an email back the same day from customer service with some instructions, and another update today that my replacements have shipped.

That’s just wildly great customer service, especially for WizKids, which back in the days when I played HeroClix were kind of crappy and a lot slower about getting replacements out to you. I’m really liking the new management and will feel much more comfortable ordering their products in the future.

Also, for what it’s worth, each replacement package generates a number, and mine was 1243. I’m guessing they’ve shipped out at least that many replacement packages (of course, that number may apply to all their stuff).

So how do you handle fog of war with this? Do you have separate graphics files with areas shaded out?

Actually, you could use transitions on PowerPoint slides, couldn’t you? Hmmmmmm

Woohoo! Free games! Well, sort of. I was sifting through my desk drawer looking for something and came across two gift cards for my local game store. I went down tonight and they were worth enough to buy Shadow of the Horned Rat and Merchants & Marauders!

Yay for forgotten gift cards :)

You chose…wisely. Great game!

That’s surprising… I’d figured so much of Blood Bowl is placement on the pitch that it wouldn’t translate at all. I’ll have to check it out.

How does the 4 player angle work? Is it a 2 v 2 partnership game like Bridge or something?

It is not much like the actual game on the pitch, but rather a clever adaptation of blood bowl concepts to, I guess, trick taking. It’s all vs all, although each individual “match” is 1vs1 within the broader tournament.

Any of you guys planning on getting Eclipse? It looks really promising - a version of Twilight Imperium with a randomized tech tree and some cool mechanics. For example, the marks on the edges of hexes (half circles) show you that you can jump in one direction or the other. A lot of the time, the connections between hexes are one way. That is, until you put wormhole generators on your ships.

And the best part? Games take about 2 hours. Sign me up! As much as I love TI3, I really never have 8 hours to play it.

There’s no partnership aspect to the game - each player has their own team and is playing to earn upgrades and fans (which are VPs) for themselves. Each tournament is made up of several games laid out simultaneously, and each game has spots for two of the players to compete. Everybody takes turns either playing a card to participate in an open slot in one of the games, or playing a card to improve their chance of winning a game they already are participating in.

Like LK said, it’s somewhat like a climbing trick-taking game (where multiple independent tricks are being played into simultaneously) crossed with a deck building game and infused with Blood Bowl concepts.

That’s sounds really offbeat.

Aha! I see it’s by FFG, so the rules are online.

After watching Jeremy’s Components Breakdown video earlier this week, Eclipse looks like a winner. He said it’s currently his favorite 2011 title–that’s a bold statement! I’d love to play it, but I’m not sure my primary board gaming partner would be interested, and I know members 3 and 4 of my gaming group would definitely not be interested. There are just too many good board games currently out or set to release soon.

Game 2 of Conquest of Nerath PBF has kicked off! It pits Qt3’s very own Dave Perkins and Hans Lauring against each other in a 2-player alliance game! Dave controls the forces of evil, while Hans controls the forces of good. You can follow the action in the BGG thread. May the best conqueror win!

Hoping to play it at BGG.Con as it looks right up my alley.
