That sounds like a cool game, thanks for the tip.

Arg! Dammit! I JUST Bought Thunderstone for my wife last week! Nuts!

My goodness,
I got Dreadfleet as an early gift and I don’t know what to do with it! It looks like you have to put all the pieces together like a complex model kit and they’re all dark grey. So…

  1. Do I leave them grey and put them together?
  2. Paint a base coat for each party so they’re easier to tell apart?
  3. Actually try and paint them??? Eek!
  4. Can you do it like paint-by numbers? I could handle that. Bad paint would look better than no paint right?

For what it’s worth, The Resistance is the new favorite game of my board gaming group. We are pretty much limited to quick-playing boardgames, and this one fits the bill nicely.

There’s some great looking ships in there, so I don’t blame you for being nervous. You might want to think about using color basecoats to more clearly tell them apart at a glance; if you put on a thin layer, it may even help bring out details. If you then want to paint them up later, thisgives you the option to.

LK can probably provide some advice for this. I know he looked into the options before settling on sending his copy off to a third party company that paints stuff like this and assembles it for you. My understanding is that it’s much easier to paint if you don’t put it together first, so you may want to hold off until you figure out how to want to tackle this.

It’s definitely not a plug-in-play type of game. I can’t imagine trying to play this one unpainted given that there are a lot of pieces and it’s all one shade of plastic.

I wilted and took part in the CSI sale.

Fortune & Glory - I missed out on a $40 Cyber Monday Sale soooo …

Kingdom Builder - Session Reports and Reviews make it sound like a winner.

Felinia - Good price + Curiousity = clicking the add to cart button.

Mr. Jack: New York - Heard really good things. Hopefully I’m not missing anything by not having played the original.

I can see where you’re coming from, what with the good price and the curiosity, but isn’t that illegal where you live?

Go to your local gaming store, ask if there’s anyone who’s into painting miniatures, offer to post pics of their cool paint jobs on the internationally famous gaming website, Qt3.

Profit!

For what it’s worth, I’ve played both, and I strongly prefer The Resistance. All the additional resource management and thematic elements in BSG are unnecessary chrome for me, where the real fun is trying to figure out who the Cylon is. The Resistance is just that bit.

I have found it quite difficult to win The Resistance when on the non-traitor team. The rules are very simple, but I think there is a longer learning curve to be able to play well as a true Resistance member then as a Spy, and the success of the Resistance requires that all other Resistance members are paying attention and deducing things logically. A distracted or uninterested player will destroy the group’s success chances, which is sometimes annoying if you want to play for more than random accusation throwing.

On the upside, I’ve taught The Resistance to non-gamers with pretty good success. It’s way more accessible to people who aren’t inclined toward board games than BSG.

I adore “Through the Ages”, but haven’t played any other Chvátil designs, and I dislike most dungeon crawlers because they seem to me to be unstrategic dicefests. (And the theme is not very relevant – I find it cliched, but is not too offputting for me if the mechanics are good.)

Given these preferences, would you recommend the new Mage Knight to me, or not?

Thanks to all, for the advice. The Resistance it is.

You made me go back and look at the sale to see if I could find a gift for my wife. Then I remembered that I had already gotten her a board game for Christmas. One game she is fine with, but I think with two she’d be suspicious.

It’s nothing like Through the Ages, nor is it like any of his other designs. It’s more like Runebound/Magic Realm without all the crazy randomness. Even though you use cards and random cards are available, there is far more tactics and strategy than randomness.

That sounds refreshing to me. It’s now on my to-play list. Thanks.

Yeah, I just put it on my wishlist, and I normally hate dungeon crawl games (except Magic Realm, which I suppose technically isn’t a dungeon crawl). But I’d love to find one that both doesn’t suck and can be realistically taught and played in an evening. And my gamer group all LOVE “Through the Ages”, so it should be an easy sell. Oh, and the rules are available on BGG, which is a plus.

Any idea how realistic the 2.5 hour time is?

Does anyone have thoughts on Guards! Guards! A Discworld Boardgame and/or Ultimate Werewolf: Ultimate Edition? The former isn’t receiving much love on BGG, but the latter is the 2nd ranked party game.

If you’re like me and have considered painting your minis, yet wouldn’t know where to start, have you checked out this Painting plastic minis - A “how to” guide for beginners thread on BGG? I’m close to running out and purchasing the supplies listed in that thread and giving it a go! Painted minis add so much to a game.

With both that and the Martin Wallace Discworld games, I am caught between things in each that I like but no big picture thing that justifies a whole game. Strangely enough, in GG the biggest thing right off the bat was the board…I could almost see the game mechanics grinding away in front of me independent of the theme and nothing else seemed to matter to me after that.

I don’t want to make a claim for its elegance or mechanical soundness, but some settings cry out for the Arkham treatment that puts the theme front and center. And I’m not even sure that would be that great in a setting that is fundamentally satirical and so broad in its scope and references; by choosing Ankh-Morpork as the center of the game, they made a choice for a narrative sweep that seems beyond the reach of any one game.

At any rate, I’ll definitely give them a try at upcoming game events if I can, but that’s why I passed on what seemed like an obvious preorder at first.

Thanks for the feedback, LK.

Ummm…You do realize that those are two of the expansions on sale and not the base game (which is still listed for the price you paid)? Or are you annoyed because now you feel like you should capitalise on a good deal and are gonna be out another 30 bones? Remember, if AH has taught us anything it is that it is important to read EVERY WORD. ;)
