Thanks!

Don’t you dare use that to wank, Dave.

Why, I

I got it, but I haven’t had an opportunity to play it (or much of anything, really).

Any opinions on Omen: A Reign of War? It’s getting great reviews, and the new 2nd Edition Kickstarter looks interesting. It comes with the base game plus the expansion, and I don’t think you’ll ever find it cheaper as from what I can gather they only sell direct.

Just played Mage Knight (the new boardgame, not the older tactical minis game).

Vlaada Chvatil was already one of my favorite designers (Space Alert, Galaxy Trucker, Through the Ages) but this easily cements him as my #1 favorite modern boardgame designer. Easily.

Really like Mage Knight. It’s a sort of semi-competitive RPG. You level up, fight monsters, explore a map, but you’re racing to get more Fame than the other heroes. It gets a little arithmetic heavy at times and there are a LOT of bits and bobs to learn but it all hangs together well and doesn’t feel like there is much “wasted” mental real estate.

It also seems very expandable and the scenarios would play out quite differently. It is a bit long though – box claims 1-4 hrs but it easily took us 4 hrs (blind play, first setup) to do the very first (and shortest) scenario. I expect that goes down a lot with fewer players and more experience.

It reminds me of Eclipse in a lot of ways – many things to learn but those things fit together nicely.

Maybe I should try this team. I just tried the Spirit deck, with Dunhere, Eleanor, and Eowyn, for my first attempt at the level 1 core quest, and I only had 1 progress token on the first quest card when the three heroes were torn to pieces. It was so brutal that I’m wondering what rules I’m forgetting… like, oh yeah, after every turn all wounds heal.

Don’t feel bad Dave, it took me 3-4 tries just to beat the first mission. Building a deck that works well is SUPER important for SP. It’s tough to get a deck together that can both fight and quest.

I lost the first time I played because I didn’t really know what I was doing. But try that deck again. The spirit deck solo is very powerful against the first quest. Eowyn has 4 willpower so she should have no trouble adding progress tokens to the quests and locations. This should keep your threat level down which prevents the enemies from engaging you. Meanwhile Dunhere can attack the enemies in the staging area in order to get rid of them. That’s it.

For Rohan!

How does Mage Knight compare to Runebound?

You do know that wounds never heal after a turn is over (pg. 20), right?

He does. He’s just finally admitting to how much he loves to cheat!

Ha, ha!

Here.

Ah, totally went over my head then. :D

We played 3 rounds of LOTR LCG with the new adventure packs we got (Carrock, Hills, and Rhosbogel) and went 2 for 1.

Hills involves heavy traveling with nasty damaging when revealed effects, we won that one pretty handily (lost 1 hero, but we still felt safe). And I have to mention the artwork on these locations are like little mini paintings. It’s gorgeous!

Rhosbogel gave us a bit of a work out as we had to plan everything around keeping an eagle alive by the end of the scenario. The mechanics of which work kind of weird because you can, if you’re not careful, accidentally win or lose after finishing the 2nd to last quest.

Carrock, oh boy, you have to plan for this one. We went into it without changing our decks at all and got slaughtered! So, we’re going to rebuild our decks for this one when we play again soon. Can’t wait.

Overall, my rating of the quests I’ve played through so far:

Passage Through Mirkwood: 1/10 (ridiculously easy, nothing happening)
Journey Down the Anduin: 6/10 (moderately easy, some stuff going on)
Hills of Emyn Muil: 8/10 (moderately easy, a welcome change and lots of gorgeous locations to travel to)
Rhosbogel: 7/10 (somewhat challenging, planning needed due to weird mechanics)
Conflict at the Carrock: 7/10 (quite challenging, massive revision of decks needed)

So, Hills is my favorite so far, but I’ll still play Journey, Rhosbogel, and Conflict when I want more of a challenge. Passage I’ll probably never play due to how easy it is and I’m still too scared of Escape from Dol Guldur to try it. :P

So is Eclipse the GotY for many of you? Also, were you all saying Eclipse is already sold out… PLUS out of print? How could it be sold out before the general slow people can even buy it? So confused.

Sold out /to/ retailers. Retailers are still getting it in stock occasionally depending on their shipping arrangements. A lot of the big name online retailers presold their quantity.

It’ll get reprinted early next year & arrive in a few months.

Played it again last night, teaching it to three people, while the other table played it too, at game night. I’ve been gaming with this group for over two years & never seen the same game played at two tables :)

I’d be playing it tonight if my copy wasn’t under the Christmas tree, all wrapped up. I’ll likely get a couple of games in next week while I’m off work.

Yes, GOTY for me.

Explanation of publisher sellouts here.

I want to get another game in before declaring it the victor, but Eclipse is shaping up to be my GOTY as well.
