I’m looking forward to Kazad-Dum myself. Moria has always been one of my favorite parts of the books, and I can’t wait to build a Dwarf deck and plunge into the mines!
Anyone have any luck with a tri-color deck for single player? I’ve been trying to get one together but it seems to create a lot of resource issues for me. Any suggestions would be great.
I’m still wondering if you can bring eagles in the mines, which would be ridiculous. I’m sure the quests cards or some rule has “no eagles allowed”, right?
I haven’t built a tri-color deck yet, but I’m thinking that a well-built tri-color deck is ideal for solo play. I think the songs are key to building it along with the leadership attachment card that gives you 2 resources per turn and the hero Theodred that gives a resource to heroes that quest.
It might be hard to ban eagles rules wise, but they could certainly gimp them. Things like not allowing eagles to quest certain locations (dark) and having those locations deal 1 damage per turn they are in play to eagles might be more thematic ways to keep people from taking eagles into a mine.
Heck, they wouldn’t even bring a pony into the mines in the books!
Either that or a FFG representative comes to your house and takes all your cards, because what kind of heartless jerk takes eagles into a mine.
I definitely use Songs and Steward of Gondor, but it’s proving too unreliable. I think I will toss in Theodred and see if that helps. Basically I need more ways to get the economy going if I don’t get just the draws I need. Maybe Theodred will help with that.
It’s the only way to be sure!

I just got my shipment of LOTR LCG + Pack #3 (Journey to Rhosgobel) due to the talk about it here, and the excellent Watch It Played videos. Bought some penny sleeves for it all, read through the rules, and have it ready to go for this weekend with my son. He and I are new to the whole board/card-game scene beyond rudimentary MTG dabbling and Munchkin but this looks like everything I could have ever wanted (non collectable, co-op, etc.). Very excited!
Sweet! LotR: LCG is pretty awesome! I bought it on a total whim and am super glad I did. It’s really become one of my favorite games, and is the first solo game I have played that is actually a lot of fun to play solo (Arkham really isn’t great solo, and Elder Sign and Death Angel just kinda suck in general).
Well shit.
Thanks for all the Munchkin impressions guys, though you did all confirm my worst fears about it. I still haven’t played yet, but I’m getting the feeling my roommate and I aren’t going to be head over heals. I’m not the most hardcore board gamer out there, but I’m far from a beginner. Additionally I find the game’s “humor” pretty grating. I guess I was just hoping for a miracle.
Thankfully, our typical gaming group values drinking and bullshitting almost as much as we enjoy playing, so maybe it’ll work in that environment.
it is the sort of thing you can grab and fool around with if somebody is late then drop at a moment’s notice.
Not sure how opposed you are to fan-made stuff, but there’s a guy on the 'geek who’s basically re-writing all the basic scenarios, and will be releasing his alterations when he’s done. In the meantime, he’s explaining his thoughtsand taking critiques/suggestions. I’d link to the thread, but I’m on my phone. Look on the main MoM page. On BGG- you’ll find it.
I find that with heavily themed games like Mansions you need to have a group who will try to make the experience enjoyable. I’ve had some great and also pretty average experiences with Mansions. The best times were with people who rolled with the ongoing narrative, the average times were with people who treated it as a tactical wargame with hidden victory conditions.

Reading this thread makes me regret getting the CoC lcg over the lotr one. Every game I bought last October has gotten run except for CoC. I mean really? A two player competitive game. What is this, chess?

So got to play a few new games. Founding Fathers, a game about the Constitution by the Twilight Struggle guy, got a moderately positive reaction. It’s not as good as Twilight Struggle or 1960, and I could wish that it was somehow more thematic; but it’s pretty decent.
Dominant Species flopped hard, with the group deciding to quit playing after two turns. Fundamentally, the problem there is that they don’t like attack-y area-control games, and it felt too wargamey to them. For my part, it seemed promising, and there’s definitely a lot of meat to the game. But there was some stuff that was seriously non-intuitive (how dominance works, for instance, where numerical majority doesn’t really affect it) and there seems to be more calculation than would really be ideal. I wonder if this isn’t one of those boardgames that’d be better as a computer game. But I’d definitely be up for playing a full game, at the least.

This doesn’t work anymore, they took it off their closeout list. I’m a sad panda. It’s cheaper at csi now, or even amazon.
Sorry to hear it, Dean.
Hey, I just noticed that Olympus is on their 30%+50% off list. This is a fantastic EuroGame. Clever mechanic. And absolutely zero random chance, if you like that sort of thing.
Yeah, I’ve been following that thread and I’m excited to see the finished product for sure. Reading through some of the rules/scenario changes made me say “Ah ha! Exactly!” more than a few times.
The group of people I play with is pretty casual and has fun with it, so that’s not the issue. My wife insists that she has had fun every time, so maybe I’m the only one of us who has felt disappointed.

So we have a nice, easy-to-read list, could you all hop over to this new threadto post your GoTY?
Thanks :)
Just took my first run-through yesterday, after watching a good number of those Watch It Played videos. I lost terribly, never got far into Mirkwood, so I have a lot to learn. But it was enjoyable solo and seemed to move quickly. Liking it so far.

Have people here tried Nefarious? (One of the two new games from Donald Vaccarino).
The reaction on BGG has been pretty middling. And based on Funkula’s post earlier and a few other accounts online, it sounds like more of a filler game than anything else. Has anyone tried it and loved it?
I’m considering getting either Kingdom Builder or Nefarious more as a way to say “I really enjoy Dominion so please take more of my money” than to find a new game-of-the-year. Nefarious has the more interesting theme, but Kingdom Builder’s been getting better reviews.
Thanks for posting those links. For me, anyway, it just kind of reinforces my impression of the game: that it requires you to think in terms of min-maxing if you ever want to progress past “novice.”
