I’m sure people also recommended Citadels, Bohnanza, Robo Rally, and Formula D. Offhand, no new 7-player games pop to mind.

Splitting the game group up always feels like… well, like splitting the group. But as long as people are willing to have a bit of downtime after games to re-sync the gaming schedule, and therefore not be stuck in the same group of 3-4 all night long, it doesn’t have to feel like separate parties.

I played my first game of Quarriors tonight. I mentioned to some people that I think the sound of dice rolling sets off some type of Pavlovian response in a gamer’s head, and Quarriors takes shameless advantage of that.

I cant say the actual game is better than some others with similar mechanics that I have played, but we had a nice mix of spells and creatures, and it was a pretty good game.

(Growing even more envious…!)

In other news: Anyone trying to play solo LotR with a single deck, I strongly recommend a spirit only deck. Basically stack it for questing and threat reduction only (using only cards that are impactful for those two things). You should be able to fly under the radar of beasties with threats in the high teens for most of the game. And just quest like crazy while monsters sit in the staging area getting plinked away at.

Three of us played Smallworld tonight for the first time and LOVED it! I immediately ordered all of the other expansions. Can’t wait to play with 5 players.

Fun and fast game with lots of race/ability combinations.

Thanks for the thoughts on Mage Knight - its good to hear that it delivers what Runebound promises, but fails on (I have one of the few negative reviews posted for Runebound on BGG).

I wanted to try some 3 player Eclipse last night but one of the guys couldn’t make it and the other got stuck working late so we only had time for about half of a game of Washington’s War. My friend hadn’t played it before and I really just wanted him to see it in the hopes that we’d play a full game later on, plus it was his idea so I wasn’t going to say no to that. I don’t know if it actually makes sense to compare WW and Twilight Struggle, but as much as I appreciate the fantastic design and balance of TS I’m really liking the faster pace of WW and the fact that you don’t have to memorize the deck of cards before you can really play it. So anyway, that game still rocks. Also, William Howe is a douche bag.

Thanks for the link, Tracy. My order has been placed :D

dtolman: can you link me to your review? I would like to see if your thoughts on runebound matches mine…

Thanks

Chris

Probably not is my guess, but here you are:

I like Runebound, but only as a two player game. Downtime kills it, especially with the movement rules, but with two people who have the rules mastered the game just flies.

I know these two games probably don’t have a whole lot in common, but for a four member board gaming group that has only recently graduated past Catan, and who I am attempting to prod toward bigger and better. Chaos in the Old World or Eclipse?

Huh…that’s a hard one. Both have their learning curves. Eclipse is extraordinarily user-friendly as far as the components and play structure are concerned, so that’s a plus. But the times I’ve played CitOW are some of my favorite four-player experiences.

If the group in general is keyed into gaming culture (separate from board gaming, that is, since you mention they’re new to that) or cognizant of the Warhammer universe, then you might be good for Chaos. Otherwise I’d suggest Eclipse, since its “euro” roots will make it more familiar to your Catan-playing crowd.

Assuming you’ve played Talisman, which is your preferred 2-player game between it and Runebound? Others are free to answer this, as well!

Neither. I’d move them on to a game like Agricola or even Conquest of Nerrath.

I wouldn’t jump to either, either. Try some of the middle weight the euro-classics - Puerto Rico, El Grande, 7 Wonders (modern classic I guess), Stone Age, etc

I haven’t played Talisman. For some reason I was never interested in it. I’ve played and hated Return of the Heroes. I liked Prophecy a lot, but preferred the insane amount of loot and characters in Runebound so got rid of it.

They’re actually looking for something a little Ameritrashy.

Unfortunately, the one time I played CoN I didn’t care for it.

Without knowing your collection I’m just spitballing, but Kingsburg and Vegas Showdown are two good four-player games with a bit of 'trash in them. Super fun and not hard to pick up.

Evo (the original), is a great combo between Ameritrash and Euro. If your looking for a good Euro/dice fest combo - then I’d say go with Eclipse. Just be warned its more complex than Settlers, and goes a lot longer.

I’m not much of a board gamer, but I’m thinking about picking up a medium-difficulty game for small group play (2-4), and reading through the last several pages of this thread (and the game of the year thread), it seems like Race for the Galaxy, The Lord of the Rings Card Game, and 7 Wonders all fit this criteria and are in my price range. Any thoughts on why I should avoid one or which is best?

Thanks!
