Here’s how to choose the perfect boardgame for your group! :)

I just used that chart and came up with Cosmic Encounter, which I hate. Fail.
Hating Cosmic Encounter is objectively wrong, ioticus. I’m sorry.

I found it to be too random and pointless, and so did the group I played it with. Sorry.
Hey, I just used that chart and came up with Cosmic Encounter, which I love! Score!

I used to play Star Fleet battles solo. I’d leave the game set up on the floor of my room. One turn a night. For weeks.

I picked up Cosmic Conflict but it’s probably the least ambitious of the expansions to date. Each has added 20 aliens and components to add an additional player, along with other additions, but Conflict’s additions are a set of variant rules for team play that in no way require or use anything from the expansion itself to implement. The only other thing in the box are some additional basic encounter cards to bolster the main deck if you have the other expansions and actually want to do an 8 player game.
This is definitely the third expansion, as in you should buy the other expansions first before touching this one.
That said, they are way behind the original design on expansions, so the idea of them “stepping outside the original design” with expansions is ironically hilarious. They’ve got a ways to go yet before they’ll need to come up anything actually new.
The chart told me to play Game of Thrones, but I kind of hate that game. It’s only interesting with six and then it’s way too long for what it is. I’d rather play Cyclades. Next chart!

And by Cosmic Conflict, you mean Cosmic Alliance, yes?
I have the first two expansions, which is why I’m wondering about this third one. I don’t really play with anything other than the new alien races and player tokens. But as I said, I’ll probably pick it up sooner or later. I really wish I played that game more, though.
Cyclades is such a sexy game. Incidentally, also another game where I’m on the fence about the expansion. :)

So, I’m trying to find something for me and the wife to do together in the evenings other then watching TV (no the other activity is not an option - the kids keep coming down asking questions and asking for food). I’d like to try a boardgame. neither of us played any boardgames other then monopoly when we were kids. A co-op game would be nice, not too complicated and probably best if it does not involve Cthulhu.
Any suggestions?

Co-op? Not too complicated? No space horror?
I believe you want Pandemic.

Definitely this. Easy to learn, infinitely repayable. It’s fun just to experiment with the rules and try to figure out optimal strategies as a group. Probably a lot more fun with three or four players though. And it’s a dangerous game to introduce to new players after you’ve reached a certain level of experience and play time. Other than that it’s a fantastic pick.

The expansion is also something you should look to pick up sooner rather than later, purely because the default set of roles is a little boring after you’ve got the basics down. The new and replacement roles add a lot to the game.

Thanks, I found it on Amazon so will give it a try.
Lost Cities! Lost Cities!
It’s not co-op, but it’s a perfect 2-player game.
Lost Cities!

Broke out Ogre/GEV/Shockwave this weekend. Teaching it to a less than thrilled wife. But it still holds up. Anyone in the NYC area up for a gaming night?
Aw, why you gotta be like that yo
We played our first game of Twilight Imperium 3 this weekend. It was a 12 hour affair of galactic maneuvering and conflict. Plenty of ebbs and flows of power and in the end two of us tied for victory. Absolutely epic! It was a massive undertaking, but completely worth it.
I’m in the NYC area but I’m not sure about this Ogre nonsense. Is it more future-ASL or Warhammer minus the painting?
