Anyone here played more than a few hands of The New Era (the standalone expansion to 51st State)?

I received my P500 order of Andean Abyss on Monday. Since then I’ve setup the board to do the tutorial run through and my mind is blown with how complex and different it is from Labyrinth. You can do so much on a turn if you have the resources, recruiting 20+ insurgent cells into multiple territories, moving onto 10 or 12 lines of communication. It seems the learning curve for this will be steeper than Labyrinth, especially considering the interlplay of all four factions.
It’s so very different from Labyrinth or really many other games. The interplay of the four factions is interesting. This should be a good one.

Have you played it yet, Alan?
No I need to set up some time to do so. I have space now for solo, but I’d definitely like to try it online through VASSAL or whatever at some point.

I’m hopeful that this weekend I might finally have an opportunity to break out Labyrinth. If my gaming partner falls through, I’m committed to try it solo.
Alan,
Let us know how long it takes to play. I’ve heard it’s pretty brutal length wise and that you should not play 4 players for your first game.

I’m going to start a game at work over lunch Tuesday with an aim to finishing up next week. Four players and all… that’s the main draw to me, but we’ve done the same with 4p full conquest mage knight scenarios as well.

Orsson, hopefully your Labyrinth game goes well. Once you learn the rules and start to think about strategy, here are the introductory strategy articles that I found the most helpful. They’re linked in the resources section of BGG but there are a lot of links:
Labyrinth Event Cards That New Players MUST be Aware Of
Strategies for GMT’s Board Game Labyrinth: The War on Terror 2001 - ?
Wish I had had this when I played my first game.
I was the terrorist cells I had 2 of the cards that let you sneak into America and I had 2 nukes. It was a sure win and then my friend pulls the “F YOU” card and cancels my actions. If I had known that card existed. I would not have sent them both in. Needless to say my instant win turned into an additional 2 hour standoff.

Played my first game of Sid Meier’s Civilization the board game yesterday and we had a great time. It took us seven hours, not including the one hour tutorial and rules overview I gave everyone. As long as it was, we still had a wonderful time and will play this again next month.
In two weeks I’m having five others over for Game of Thrones. That is one that is best played with 6 players and we always have a fun time with it.
Sounds fun…all I did was unpack TI3 and look longingly at it. :(

If only you and Otogan lived closer! Let me know how TI3 plays.
I feel the pain of both of you. I’ll add another :-( to the pile.
I spent most of the weekend painting Rohan minis from War of the Ring. Man, painting minis is awesome when it’s done but the rest of the time it’s the worst torture ever that doesn’t involve, like, actual torture.
TI3 is extremely long (like 12 hours) but it is an amazing galactic epic of war and diplomacy to gain control of the cosmos. Easily the most epic game I have ever played and despite it’s massive complexity it actually plays very smoothly. Definitely one of my favorite games and a “must play” if vying for control of the universe is your sort of thing.
I’m in the process of painting my Menoth army for Warmachine and I rather like painting those little zealots. I find it very relaxing. It is also extremely satisfying.
I also painted up my ships for Merchants and Marauders…which was torture. Basically painting the same few (and rather boring looking) ships over and over and over and over and over. Ugh. No more painting board game minis for me.
Picked up:
Seasons (Liked this enough to buy it figured I could get my wife to play it.
Netrunner (please be better than the other LCGs)
Trajan (was excited about this for so long…now not sure but I haven’t opened it yet)
Let me know what you think of Netrunner. It seems to be all the rage right now, so I am kinda curious why people are so gaga over it.
