Can anyone recommend The Resistance or The Resistance: Avalon?
Haven’t played Avalon, but the original is probably the best and most elegant of the secret identity games. Some people describe it as Battlestar Galactica Lite. Highly recommended if you have a large game group and they like a little backstabbing.
Resistance is the bomb yo.

I’ve played The Resistance (base game) twice with 5 players, and we liked it but we don’t see how the resistance has a fair chance to win. The version I bought 6 months ago came with a mini expansion, some cards that give each player some ability. We haven’t used those yet.

Quinns from Sit Down, Shut Up gave an interesting presentation at a British games convention. His premise: now is a golden age of boardgaming.
GMT’s Fall Sale is up. Great deals, especially if you got P500 games this year (like Andean Abyss) since you can get 50% off all in-stock items (up to X+1 amount, where X is the number of P500 games you got this year).

After much oohing and aahing, I finally decided to take the plunge and get Descent 2e. I tried it last night with my lovely but seriously evil wife (she picked the Overlord role) and we loved it.
I wrote a session AAR and some impressions of the game on BGG for those still thinking about whether to get it: http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/878253/descent-2e-first-blood-our-very-first-campaign-qu
I have to say I’m impressed by the quantity and quality of the components. The rules were clear (though it’s better to spend some time going through them BEFORE playing) and time flew while we played and the Overlord trashed my poor heroes.
And now we’re just about to get started on the second scenario. I think I’m going to take the BGG suggestion and bring in a 3rd character as reinforcement. Bigger, badder monsters for the OL and more options for me.
Fun times!

Anyone picked up Spartacus: A game of blood and treachery?
I just picked it up and read the rules, I’ve never been blown away by rules before, but this one is the perfect sweet spot imo. Its models simulation via the rules, but has a very streamlined simplified euro feel to them. Really my ideal mix of game design modeling, simple but straightforward game mechanics that simulate the desired subject matter. Its the most brillant combo I’ve seen yet, as far as straight read of the rules. I’m SOOOO looking forward to playing this! Anyone else got a chance to get a group going with it? Does it hold up well in play?
Anyone know a realistic playtime for Spartacus?

I played four games last night with four players. Three were “quick” gameswhere you start at 7 influence, and those took 1.5-2 hours. A medium game starting at 4 influence took about 2.5 hours. We all had a great time.
Terra Mystica is awesome!!
Imagine Kingdom Builder is an acne riddled awkward teenager. Well Terra Mystica is like a grown up, sexy 21 year old version of the game. Well balanced, little to no down time and a dash of Uwe Rosenberg thrown in for good measure.
Gaming goodness !
Two games are on my group’s current rotation: Spartacus is every bit as good as the hype.
It’s a great game for utter bastardry.
City of Horror has also provided a lot of laughs. We’re still getting our heads around it though; it’s very much a negotiation game where the people who can get the first agreement in tend to thrive.
Hey guys, what’s a highly replayable game that’s at its best with two players? Short sessions are a plus.
I already have Carcasonne and Neuroshima Hex.

If you want short, and great with two players, then the instant recommendations are Lost Cities and Jaipur. Battle Line is also often brought up, along with Jambo.
Race for the Galaxy takes longer to learn initially, but is an excellent two player game as well.
I’m a big fan of LotR:LCG for a two player game. Definitely one of my favorite games!
Ill second the race for the galaxy recommendation, but only up to the first expansion. The other expansions add fiddly things that I don’t feel adds to the gameplay significantly.
You can add the cards from the expansions but still use the base rules and ignore the other fiddly rules that were added. Probably not worth a purchase but if you already have the expansions you don’t have to remove the cards when you decide the new rules aren’t any good.
A lot of the extra mechanics the expansions add are optional and the cards are still interesting and add variety even if you don’t use those mechanics.
