Does the Twilight Struggle PC version allow asynchronous or PBEM?

I think it was released already?

I found a thread on BGG about a demo:

I was thinking VASSAL, not using the upcoming PC standalone game (I am undecided as to whether to buy it since I already own the game).

Although it’s not entirely clear, everything I’ve read makes me think it is live online play only. Which is nuts. (And no, it is not released yet). Oh, and there’s no demo, and there probably won’t be. The “demo” mentioned in the thread is just the video.

If you want to play online, I suggest ACTS (http://acts.warhorsesim.com). It is a bit primitive, but it works. Each player can keep their own board however they like (there are some good spreadsheets available on BGG, or you can use VASSAL, or CyberBoard, or whatever), and ACTS handles the cards.

It’s online play as well as single-player with a built-in AI. Actually what online play entails is not really detailed, though at the very least there is live-play (as a real-time chat window ins mentioned).

Sorry, yes, I agree it is clear there will be an AI for single player. I meant that for two-player games, from what I’ve read, it seems that both players will have to be connected at the same time in order to play.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I managed to get Jack, Jambo and Lost Cities all used for $50!

I just played Uncharted the board game this weekend. I thought, oh no, another lame video game conversion. Should have rememeber Doom though…its SOOO worth taking a look at. Sort of a thematic, boardgame, deck building euro game, but waaay better than that sounds!
Block damage by leaving cards untapped. discard cards to activate special effects like healing, and each card has effects, you can take 2 actions every round, but your turn doesnt end till you pass. Once the turn end you apply all effects, including damage from enemies, then you untap all your cards, then the next round begins. There is so much more to it, had to get it!

Also just got informed that Agents of SMERSH is now shipping to backers. Yet another kickstarter headed to my hands. I’ve gotten very lucky apparently, as I’ve got about 80% of my stuff on the way or already recieved and back over 25 projects:)

I’ve recently purchased Virgin Queen, Paths of Glory, and Combat Commander (Europe and Mediterranean) from GMT if anyone is up for forum games of those.

Ohhh definitely :)

— Alan

Seems Virgin Queen would work best if we can get at least 4.

This has to have come up before but talk of playing GMT games online has to include wargameroom.com. They’re pretty basic java programs but there is a community of players and they have a decent catalog. Now the programs are not asynchronous meaning your only option is to have a live game, although it can be saved if the players feel like taking a break.

VQ really needs the full complement of 6. We could do with 4 in a pinch, but it is sub optimal.

I am in, of course.

I’ve never played VQ so unlike AA I won’t be any help with the rules. Have you guys played before?

I’d love to play, if someone has the patience to show me what the hell to do…

I think a few of us will be in that boat, Mark. Hopefully we’ll have someone who has played before. And there are PDF copies of the rules available.

Me too. I have a feeling we’d be groping around a bit (maybe we should start with Here I Stand and then graduate to Virgin Queen, since they are the same series, people are slightly more familiar with the former, they’re being played in order, and I think we can even keep the same players roughly).

Though groping can be fun in of itself.

The rulebooks for both have extended examples that run along history that are vital for learning the game, FYI.

I have played VQ a few times, and Here I Stand many times. I am not an absolute authority, but I have a pretty firm grasp of the rules.

I’ve played VQ and like it a lot, but I unfortunately don’t think I’ll have time for this the next couple months. It’s a fairly diplomacy-intensive game, much more so than Here I Stand.

I liked HiS a lot, but would rather just watch you guys. What program are you planning to use to manage the board?

Excellent. My copy of Agents of SMERSH was just dropped off. I kickstarted this back in March. Can’t wait to give it a play!
