Like I said before, not in my group. And frankly, perhaps we’re not familiar with the game enough, but I just don’t see how any given player can realistically make the assumption that they are losing in a game with pretty tight VP point spreads (most VP objective cards are 1st place: 3pts, 2nd: 2 and 3rd: 1), where those VPs aren’t awarded until after the game ends, the game-end conditions themselves are mostly hidden (each player knows exactly one way the game might end), and the ways to get VPs are mostly hidden, too (each player knows the one public objective everyone knows and one hidden objective in a game with as many hidden objectives as the number of players).

I just don’t see it as a problem, but that’s after only two games- perhaps more plays will see it manifest. I can’t imagine how, though. Once you do get it played, let me know what you think. I’m certainly interested in hearing other experiences.

Re: Archipelago, I think the question of “sabotaging the game because I’m not winning” is different from the question of “everybody refuses to contribute to keep the game going because, all other things being equal, contributing worsens your position”.

The first is “can the game be broken by someone determined to break it” (which is true for most games, if you think about it), while the second is “will the game be broken if everybody plays optimally”, which is pretty bad if true.

Again, I haven’t played, so I don’t know. I’m just summarizing what I’ve read on BGG. But people on BGG can be… argumentative. Since Don Q has actually played it, I’m fairly willing to accept his explanation that there is too much uncertainty in the scoring and end-game conditions to justify risking an “everybody loses” situation just to gain some small perceived advantage.

Played a round of BSG tonight, getting ready to start the local dreadball league.

Just in time as wave two (a-wing, tie interceptor, Slave 1, Falcon) is about to hit and should add some tasty variety to the game.

I’m in a meetup game group that plays every Weds and also has a mini “con” of ~20-45 people every 1st Saturday of the month.

The biggest plays I’ve had in the past month or so is Axis & Allies. We played the new 1942-2e a couple of time and love it. We have an all-day session planned in a couple of weeks to play the new Global game, which is the A&A Europe 1940 2e game played with the A&A Pacific 1940 2e game. A mega WW2 recreation.

Some quick comments from recent plays:

The good:
King of Tokyo expansion: More awesome!
Castles of Burgandy: Great Euro
Princess: Very fun and short card game.
Fortress America: Old school IGOUGO but I liked it back in the 80s and liked playing it again.
Dice Town: Fun Old West dice rolling game.

The meh:
Chaos in the Old World: Didn’t feel like Warhammer and too many text-heavy cards in play every turn.
Acquire: Seems like a game with an optimal play pattern. Wasn’t thrilled with this.

I also have Dreadball but my game crafting queue is pretty large and this is near the back of it. I hope to build and paint them in about a month.

Each Chaos God in Chaos in the Old World only has a handful of different power cards, so after a few plays it should be easy enough to familiarize yourself with them. But if you didn’t enjoy it enough to play it regularly there’s no reason that should sway your opinion.

Dr Who solitary game, just got easier to play.

Online wiki that manages most of the rules for you.

It also adds sound effects to the various images, nice additition! Been meaning to restart a new doctor and create some new session reports. :) Add a little more automation (like an auto dice roller) and I might just have to add this to the ios gaming thread. :)

It’s about as Warhammer as you can get. They absolutely nailed the theme.

After thinking about it a bit more you are right. The theme was good. I knew there was a game I played this week where the theme didn’t come through and for me it was the new Marvell Card game. I don’t see why people like this game. I thought it was horrible. On my turns the cards I had in hand dictated my moves 99% of the time and the game felt nothing like super heroes and villains fighting it out. I bet if the theme was shifted to flowers and bugs that no one would like this game. It’s bad.

One last thing about Chaos in the Old World, the map was hard to read. Too much blurry clutter, making the territories hard to figure out for a newbie.

Received my copy of the Mage Knight expansion today. Probably won’t get around to playing it for a couple of weeks, though.

well…I almost hesitate to mention this one, but it is what I have been playing…

Champions of the Galaxy ( http://filsingergames.com/champions-of-the-galaxy/ ) has been “rediscovered” by me. This is a dice & card wrestling game, set in the future (current game year is 2128). If you ever enjoyed watching wrestling on TV, but ever thought you could run a wrestling promotion better, this is the game for you. I have played it on and off since around 1990-91. Tom Filsinger started CotG in 1986 or so, and has continued to release game editions every year (and for quite a while, 2 editions were released each year). Wrestlers will age, and either be upgraded or downgraded, and eventually retire. There are managers, outside interference, and about any special type match you could dream of, including Cage matches, Cell matches, Weapons matches, Coffin matches, Battle Royals, and everything in between. Basically, if you can think it, you can run it.

The game puts you, the player, as a the promoter. Tom Filsinger gives you the background and a starting point, but the game is yours. The interesting thing about the game, though, is the progression of your fed. You champions, feuds, alliances, ect are all organic. Things change, and it is up to you to run it all. The game features incredible art on one side of each wrestler card, and the game stats for each wrestler on the other side of their card. There are also charts for when you throw someone into the ropes, turnbuckles, out of the ring, or when you climb the turnbuckle to try to do a flying diving attack. Filsinger Games has been around for well over 25+ years, and the creator (Tom) is very approachable. I have actually met him in person, and he runs a Con every year in the summer for his games. CotG is not the only one he makes, either, as he also has Legends of Wrestling (LOW) which is real-life wrestlers, and many of the smaller indy feds that are around (if you are a wrestling fan, you would recognize Ring of Honor, CZW, Chikara, Championship Wrestling from Hollywood, and Shimmer).

Basically, you run the fed, the promotion. You set up the cards/shows. You determine who gets title shots, and the angles and…well, everything. But, the dice decide who wins!! Sure, some wrestlers are better stat wise than others, but very interestingly enough, the dice can hate certain characters for a time that should dominate.

The game is an on-going saga that has gone for 41 game editions, plus other game editions that cover the years prior to the 2087 start year (the Galaxian Wrestling Federation, the GWF, actually storyline wise, began in 2074, but the game itself picks up in the game year 2087). There honestly, is no end in sight. Everytime we think Tom could not write any better, he out-does himself all over again. If you like wrestling, if you like comics art, if you enjoy roleplaying even, check it out at the link I posted above. This has been in my life for 23 years, and has brought me up from many very low points in my life. It is something that I have had and played for so long.

So, yeah, that has been what I have been playing quite a bit of, again, lately. Check it out…

It’s a beautiful, beautiful board, but you’re absolutely right.

Woah, that’s something. Why have I never heard of this?

It has been around for years and years and years…and like I said, if the futuristic aspect is not something you would enjoy, check out his other sets, like Legends of Wrestling, and other other smaller indy sets.

NightGaunt, I typed in almost the exact same response after before my internet died. I’m shocked I haven’t even heard of it. Some day I will have to investigate that beast!

This weekends game is … drumroll please…
Axis & Allies Global 1940 2e!!

Yep, it’ll be a 12 hour ordeal that may see the end of the game. I’ve been watching WW2 battleship YouTube videos in preparation! =o

EDIT: double whammy!

Read some reviews but anyone here have Exodus: Proxima Centauri?
If so do you own TI3 and or Eclipse? Is there room for both in a collection of games?

If you haven’t already, I’d recommend watching UndeadViking’s video review. As usual, he does an excellent job providing a thorough explanation of the rules. But, more importantly, as someone who’s played TI3 and Eclipse extensively, he offers his opinion on where this game belongs in his collection.

Yeah I already watched it, which is why I was asking.

Tom Vasel has been praising Exodus for months. It’s on my list to get and I think it comes out soon.
