Although I’ve been avoiding the term, I need a murse (man purse, man bag, fag bag, etc) because the various things I would like to take with me when the baby and I leave the house don’t all fit in my pockets and the diaper bag is full to the brim with baby stuff. I’ve been searching high and low for something that will carry a few pencils, a book or two, a pocket chess set, my cellphone, mp3 player and wallet. I’ve got a couple of nice bags that I use for school, but I want something smaller. A smaller backpack is out because our diaper bag is a backpack, so I need something over-the-shoulder. Most things are too bulky (laptop bags and messenger bags), flimsy (canvas), and/or too expensive. So I’ve finally come across a Tumi bag that I really like, although it’s tad bit smaller than I would like (prefer smaller to larger, however) and costs about twice what I wanted to spend. Since everything else tends to be either really crappy or more expensive than the Tumi, I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with Tumi. Are they overpriced? I saw the bag in person and liked the build quality and the warranty is extremely generous, but I’d like to have some real-world feedback on how well they actually hold up.
Also, feel free to make fun of me for buying a murse or to offer alternate suggestions.

There are lots of things here that would work for your needs. Messenger bag companies are a good way to go.

I’m generally more partial to Bailey Works (I own a gigantimous Super Pro), but the Chrome Vega looks nice. Thanks.
I prefer the Chrome bags solely because their straps are more comfortable. Bailey makes great bags, though. Just not sure they have anything in the murse category.

Much geek cred comes from this. Woz wears it. They also have cheaper options, if you don’t really need 52 separate pockets. But even if you don’t need it, you want it, don’t you?

My murse: Mountainsmith Day pack.
It’s doubley awesome because it can also be worn a as a fanny pack!
In all seriousness though, this thing is great because it has so many synch straps that it can be easily adjusted to be many different volumes.

For the cheap route, you can always get ye’ ol’ Israeli paratrooper bag, too.
Be a real man. Get a kilt that comes with its own fancy fur container-purse.

The Israeli Paratrooper bags were specifically the bag I was thinking of when I mentioned flimsy and canvas.
I’ve added spines to my more flimsy bags and liked them a lot more as a result.

A couple of Christmases ago, I got my boyfriend one of the custom messenger bags from http://www.timbuk2.com/
They have a lot of different sizes (I got him a larger one so he can also put his laptop in it if needed) and virtually indestructible. Also (mostly) Made in the USA!
They are pricey, but they are completely worth it.

I love my Timbuk2 bag.
My wife has one in waxed canvas that’s even nicer, but it was apparently some limited-edition thing.

just use a small day rucksack myself.
Go with the Paratrooper Khaki. It looks like it has boobs, so you’ll feel more hetero.
