I have a real soft spot for Nightingale. It’s so tacky, but I dunno, it still does for me.
I got into them because this was the first metal song I ever listened to:

That’s what brought me into the scene. The singer is Dan Swanö, who is in Nightingale with his brother Dag.
They still hold pride of place on my battlejacket, and I think the most nervous I’ve ever been in my life, is when I was told I was gonna get a call from Dan Swanö to interview for a metal megazine I was writing for, to talk about Bloodbath.
It turned out he bailed, and it was Jonas Renkse from Katatonia instead. I’ve never been so disappointed to talk to a metal celebrity before.
This is one of the best progressive/concept death metal albums ever made in my opinion (or songs):

It’s funny because in the late 90s, early aughts, Dan Swanö was one of the most prolific guys in the scene. He was “the sideproject man”. If Dan Swanö wasn’t in your band, you probably weren’t in the scene, and that actually led to some people thinking he was uncool at the time.
I remember taking a lot of flak for being an Edge of Sanity fanboy, I had to tell a lot of people off, and it’s funny, because today when people see me with a patch or a shirt they’re like “Oh my god, so good”, and I’m just thinking “Where the fuck were you 20 years ago?”
