Day #134 - Red Fang
https://youtu.be/WQPfQvLIseA
“Red Fang capture the loud and fast, anything-goes spirit of classic rock with their heavy stoner-influenced jams. Emerging in 2005, the quartet make guitars the focus of their gimmick-free brand of driving rock & roll, eschewing any prog leanings and putting the emphasis on the riffs. The sound is tied together by a sense of punk urgency that spurs the stoner jams into action and gets the songs moving at a raucous gallop”
Day #136 - ReVamp

Interim band for Floor Jansen in between After Forever and Nightwish.
I’m glad you guys know about Deathspell Omega, they’re my favourite jazz band.
What about Nyredolk?
I’m bored by a lot of the black metal coming out nowadays. A lot of it is so carefully crafted and aesthetic, it’s like artisinal black metal™, which takes all the fun out of it for me. It’s missing the smack and horror of a lot of the older bands I’m into. Nyredolk’s got it though. Those guys are into some dark heavy juju.
I know what you mean.
The new Deathspell Omega album is sounding like that to me atm, it’s just kinda dull. I guess that’s part of their thing, a more sedate artsy release following a couple ‘ferocious’ albums. I do still really appreciate the Si Monvmentvm trilogy but I think their day is done.
If you have any more recommendations along the lines of Nyredolk, I’m all ears! This is predominantly the style I love, and I’ve not followed releases closely lately. I need some new cold evil stuff.
The last rawer black albums I got into were ‘Geister’ by Paysage d’Hiver and the recent Funeral Mist album ‘Deiform’. And even Funeral Mist is sounding pretty overproduced, as good an album as it is.

Have you guys seen this before? Remarkably good for generated music:

Yes! It’s genuinely pretty listenable, especially as background material. Funny to me, too, as it’s often cited as a fairly prog friendly genre. Maybe all those wild time signatures and whatnot really are better for robots than people :-)
I’m glad you liked it!
I totally agree, I don’t think Deathspell Omega are living up to their earlier stuff. Ironically for what I said, they are one of the most complex, well-produced bands out there, but previously I thought they earned it. I can live with it though, we got a few good albums out of it.
I’m afraid I don’t have a ton of new stuff to share. My previous high was the latest Armagedda album, which came out of nowhere back in 2020. One of my all-time favorite bands:
On the more vintage side, I recently reconnected with Holy Death “The Knight, Death and the Devil” which is just a brutally underrated album:

Awesome, thanks - have not heard either of those, so adding to my library!
Day #137 - Rhapsody & Rhapsody of fire & Luca Turilli’s Rhapsody
It was only the other day that I learned this band from Italy had split in two new bands. I put them all together because whatever. I haven’t listened at Rhapsody in a decade to be honest. It’s very cheesy Euro fantasy/power metal.

I’m going to see some iteration of the post split band at progpower this year and I’m deliriously excited, hah

Symphony of Enchanted Lands part 2 is an utterly delightful album because it leans all the way into embracing the absurdity.
I mean come on, it has freaking Christopher Lee narrating! What’s not to love!
Yeah, that’s for sure, they lean hard into it. I think after that Christopher Lee did a solo album?
Two! Concept albums about Charlemagne. They’re. . . not amazing, but the sheer amazing/absurd idea of them was enough to make me listen at least once through apiece, hah.

Yeah they aren’t good in the classical sense, but as curiosities I am glad they exist.
I mean a 91 year old actor heavy metal Charlemagne concept album vanity project is just such a wild thing that I can scarcely believe exists.
Like the fact that he wanted to make a metal
album in his 90’s is just plain badass.
You know, I wonder if Mr. Lee did this to indulge a younger relative or acquaintance.
“Great-Grandpa Chris, it would be SO BAD ASS if you made a metal album”

From what I’ve read, it seems that this was something he wanted to do. Given his work with other metal bands, such as Rhapsody of Fire, in the past and his (supposed) familial connection to Charlemagne it was his idea.

Surprised no one has mentioned this. Not like the best thing ever, but not terrible

Sometimes I remember Red Queen existed and then I’m sad they effectively don’t any more.
Supposedly they’ll have a new album this year. But they supposedly were going to have one in 2020, so I’m not buying it.
Still, they’re pretty dope and had potential. Too bad they only existed for 6 tracks.
Day #138 - Rivers of Nihil
You knew I had to put the olw song.
