Oooh these guys are one of my classical faves! They always seem a bit obscure and underappreciated, for how good they are.

Sorry to say that this album though, is easily the worst in their catalogue. :)

Their big three for me are:

  • Twilight of the Idols (1999)
  • Down Among the Deadmen (2000)
  • Traveller (2003)

Others are good also, like Atavism (2005) and Hardworlder (2007).

My favourite has to be Traveller, a concept album based on GDW’s 1977 sci-fi TRPG of the same name.

I only had the last two albums fro Slough Feg, but I will explore their first ones. In fact the whole ‘looking at one artist per day’ is making me review each and see what I’m missing.

I don’t know where you find the time to listen to artist per day, and their backlog! :)

Anyway, those three albums I mentioned are well worth anyone’s time, superb music and lyrics both. Worth a few spins if you’re into that old riffy gallopy sound full of harmonic guitar licks.

For anyone interested, the band name (Lord Weird Slough Feg) and a bunch of earlier song stories come from the 2000AD comic ‘Sláine’.

Well, the music goes to my backlog :P.

Day #158 - Soen
https://youtu.be/de-g9u2C3i0

“Soen is an experimental prog metal band from Northern Europe whose music has been rightly characterized as “melancholic bliss.” Their sound is adorned with lush production, melancholy atmospherics (even at their most aggressive), and instrumental melodicism, and Joel Ekelöf’s clean vocals deliver psychologically complex, spiritually probing, sophisticated lyrics.”

edit: for example, with Soen, I just noticed that I was missing the latest album.

Day #159 - Soilwork

Day #160 - Soulfly

Another bad I haven’t listened in several years.

New Rammstein:

Cool video as always, although the song didn’t resonate with me.

Day #161 - Soundgarden

God-tier band, but Not Metal.

I admit they only put a toe on the metal genre from time to time. But, hey Wikipedia says:

Soundgarden is “metal adjacent”, like Zeppelin.

Here, let me give you an example of a metal band whose name starts with S:

A bit of nu metal for today

Day #162 - Spineshank

If listening to this podcast…

…doesn’t put you in the mood for this…

…then I dunno what will.

This is a fairly new addition, I think someone here put a video and I liked them?

Day #163 - Spiritbox

“Vancouver quartet Spiritbox ply a '90s-influenced brand of melodic alternative metal featuring multiple genre elements, beautiful vocals, and possible paranormal EVP (electronic voice phenomena) field recordings. Echoing acts like TesseracT, Deftones, and Evanescence, their sound – incorporating elements of metalcore, nu-metal, prog, shoegaze, and djent…”

Probably me, since I love me some Spiritbox.

Day #164 - Spiritual Beggars

https://youtu.be/tvi2V6mFlYM

A bit more hard rock/stoner metal vibe.

The next s is Star One from Arjen Anthony Lucassen, but let’s be honest, Star One is exactly the same as Ayreon, musically speaking. They could have been published perfectly with the Ayreon brand. The difference seems to be Star One is for scifi themed songs and Ayreon albums are usually concept albums.

Day #165 - Static-X

I have some from Steve Wilson, but I guess it’s too much proggy rock for the thread. So :

Day #166 - Stone Sour

Fun video, I hadn’t watched it before.

First you skip Star One, Now this?

You, sir, are doing me dirty :)
