I’m not really a fan of Phil Anselmo these days, but I still might go see this. Thankfully I got to see Pantera in their prime for the Far Beyond Driven tour - Dime was awesome of course. Zakk & Charlie can definitely play these songs and I like to think that the Abbott brothers would be happy with these selections.

Yeah, this one is a beast!

Top-notch Aussie progressive discordant deathly abominations with Altars - Ascetic Reflection.

Kind of like a more approachable Portal, with hints of Morbid Angel. Varied tracks that don’t outstay their welcome, heavy as, and totally engaging and interesting throughout. Takes a few listens to appreciate, as it’s not an ‘immediate’ type of album. Worth it. :)

Here’s another good one - I can’t believe I missed this one releasing last year, given I loved their previous album!
Vortex of End - Abhorrent Fervor. They’re a French band playing their own flavour of aggressive yet kind of epic black/death.

Good stuff!

Here’s some spooky deathy stuff. Sort of a Dissection vibe, or a more melodic Blood Incantation.

Melodic Death Metal. I found it by chance while searching info for Ne Obliviscaris

BG was always known to be the nerdy Power Metal band with Lord of the Rings songs. But you know, I think it’s just… almost laziness at the time of choosing a subject to write a song. What to pick? Just whatever latest book he read. At this point they have songs about works of: Tolkien, Stephen King, Philip K Dick, Brandon Sanderson (this one, from the Way of Kings), Robert Jordan, George RR Martin, Neil Gaiman, Andrzej Sapkowski and etc etc. I suspect the few songs they have that are not about fictional works are actually explained because he also read a non-fiction book about whatever theme the song is about, like a song about Copernicus or a song about Salem’s trials.

Are you calling Varg Vikernes lazy?

Cirith Ungol have a double hitter because the name is Tolkien but the cover art is Moorcock, by Michael Whelan.

We know Elric when we see him!

Adding this to my playlist, I love a good murky production!

So, apparently this is a thing

300 years old, yo

Uli John Roth of the Scorpions had a full second career of doing things like this, including a full Four Seasons (but many other recognizable classical songs as well)

Nice.

Vivaldi was a genius at melody; he certainly knew his craft.

Look up Uli John Roth Transcendental Sky Guitar, I think its right up your alley.

Uli is nuts. That dude has some of the longest, nimblest fingers I’ve ever seen on a human. Just watching him play is crazy.

I almost feel bad for preferring his more rocking stuff with Scorpions, because he’s probably only delivering 20% of what he can do technically on most of those songs.

(there’s a little interview part in the beginning where he talks about classical music if you wanna geek out)

Vivaldi metal with no mention of The Great Kat?

Cool article here talking a bit about African metal. Has a short interview with Overthrust’s Vulture. I haven’t listened to as much African metal as I’d like, but I have heard some Overthrust, and I might try to track down a copy of the book they mention in the article.
