Yeah the only African metal bands I can think of that I’ve listened to are from Tunisia or Egypt. Which for purposes of that article are so culturally different as to not count. Anything north of the Sahara is really not what would typically be considered ‘African’ as it more closely is Arabic culturally.

I was friends with the dude from Overthrust back in my social media days. That’s quite a scene they got going on down there. Leather trench coats in Botswana weather, that’s dedication!

You have to worship her, or you’ll die!

He’ll be hard to get out a window, at least he’s got that going for him.

New Delain video came out in the last week, popped up on my YouTube page.

Hey wait, that’s not Charlotte Wessels! Turns out, Delain fractured last year, everyone going their separate ways. Delain founder Martijn Westerholt revived the group with a couple of members from 10-ish years back and a couple new folks, including new frontwoman Diana Leah (who seems to be pretty much new on the scene, didn’t see any prior experience with a quick search). Supposedly they’re going on tour in a few months, be nice if they also have some more tracks with the new lineup coming.

I’m REALLY going to miss Charlotte - the Delain/Kamelot tour where she sung on a few Kamelot songs was pure magic for me. But I’m really excited to hear the new group next summer at ProgPower!

Looking at the roster for next year’s Prog Power and realized I hadn’t listened to Poverty’s No Crime in ages. Whoever is filling in for Andre Matos in Shaman has some big shoes to fill.

I managed to get tickets last week for Wacken 2023 and super excited. We went to Summer Breeze outside Munich in 2019 and had a ton of fun. My only regret was staying at a hotel down the road instead of at the festival grounds. Hopefully we can get a rental camper or tent with electric this time so I don’t die from my apnea.

SO envious for the Wacken tix! I’m currently trying to decide if I wanna stay at the Artmore at PP since it’s right by the venue and is where they host a big after party with the bands every night.

Like, I went to the afterparties this year. I just had to drive to my hotel fifteen minutes away afterwards, hah.

Nice. We are going down to Atlanta for Sabaton and Epica in October. Are you heading down for that show by chance? I enjoy Sabaton in doses, but love the live show.

Not metal, but think we will go to KMFDM and Violent Femmes are Cats Cradle in October.

Hmm. Unsure. Hoping to go on a trip to Miami this fall after the basketball schedule is released, so that could interfere, but it’s been a few years since I’ve seen Sabaton so it would def be fun to do so again!

The new album of Soilwork, Övergivenheten, is out.

New Russian Circles stuff

New Orbit Culture.

I recently journeyed to Næstved Metalfest, which is a cute little rural Danish fest to see Candlemass play with the original vocalist Johan Längquist, also formerly of Jonah Quizz for the ultra nerdbags among us.

It was a really good show, those guys are a well oiled machine. It always blows me away when someone like Johan comes back and it feels like he never missed a beat. He’s a fricken awesome frontman.

Næstved Metalfest has a pretty crazy musical profile, they even had metalcore! I think. Is crabcore metalcore? Anyway, there was a french band called Dagoba, and those dudes were crabbing all over the place.

Brandnu Threshold and Devin Townsend drop today.

This absolutely tracks with what’s come before, but I am excited to hear what’s coming down the pipeline. I still miss Mac everyday, but Glynn is really growing on me between this and Legends of the Shires. Very melodic and “big” feeling first track.

This is comparatively very chill. Definitely throughlines from Empath and Puzzle here in this fairly chill and hopeful track, but obviously hinting at brasher and bolder things to come deeper in the album. And watching Dev wander around in his doofy outfit is a genuine treat.

Whoa, hadn’t realized he was performing with them. I’m always gonna miss Marcolin, but that’s cool!

This is an incredible series of sentences.

Very encouraging for their ProgPower show next year. Definitely a major change of pace from the other acts there, but it’ll be a good wakeup segment, hah.

And so good.

Yeah, those guys have gone through a vocalist or two. Especially given the drama with Messiah, I think it’s open for debate whether the problem is the band or the supposed “divas” they hire.

It is crazy how similar Johan Längquist and Messiah sound to each other though.

And I liked both, thanks.

From what I’ve heard of the new Machine Head so far, it is MUCH better than the last few albums.

Sweet! I do love them. Even their Nu metal phase and their solo, “Evening with Machine Head” shows where it is just them for 2.5 hours are spectacular. Senn them twice in that format in a maybe half full 600 (???) person venue. Everyone who likes metal in my town should have gone to those shows.

People from away have no idea how goofy it looks when they use Ø instead of O.
