Seems like there is an album and we’re getting it one song a day at around this time?
And there are creepy Chaos Marines.

I’ve been revisiting some death metal classics of late. Ribspreader isn’t exactly original, but by gosh it works.
Autonoesis is an unsigned Canadian progressive black thrash band. Their first album was highly regarded and I could tell from the cover art and title Moon of Foul Magics that I’d probably dig it and yeah it’s currently my favourite thing. :)
Strong Vektor vibes from bits of this particular song, but it goes to a lot of places, as does the rest of the album. Some great guitar works.
Wiegedood releases are always worthwhile to me and they had a new album early last year that I’m only just getting to now. There’s Always Blood at the End of the Road is just furious black assault, reminds of earlier Anaal Nathrakh. The video is as furious as the music lol…

Blackbraid is a ‘Native American Black Metal’ solo artist from the Adirondack Mountains, this debut release Blackbraid I ended up in many ‘album of the year’ lists for 2022. It’s good, has the atmospheric epic build ups and releases, but still sounds pretty Scandinavian to me. :)
“What should we name this song?” “Well, there’s this one gun I really like in Escape from Tarkov…”
Or maybe it’s product placement for the Belgian defense industry? :D
It’s awesome music though. I especially like Autonoesis.
I always like to see people from smaller cultures enter the scene. I’ve heard from my friends who have toured the US that shows near or on reservations are as intense as they get. A lot of those guys are hardcore metalheads.
Today on my death metal retrospective, I bring you Scythe from Germany. Unlike Ribspreader, these guys are extremely original. Both deceptively melodic and utterly devastating, they definitely deserved a greater audience.
On todays death metal retrospective, less of a retrospective and more of a showcase: Shabti out of Portland, Maine.
I only know about these guys because I got to see them when I went to visit some friends over there. The ratio between quality and obscurity is pretty staggering.
On todays death metal retrospective, the bad boys from Aarhus: Illdisposed.
I’m not sure I ever knew why, but these guys used to be banned from a lot of venues in Denmark. Usually that’s the result of violent shows or vandalism, and they were known to be a pretty dysfunctional group of guys.
I went to see them as a young headbanger in 2003. I arrived early and went up to the roadies, and was like “Are you guys Illdisposed?” and they said “No, and thank fuck for that!”.
They did not appreciate being mistaken for that group of degenerates.

New Periphery!
The new album is called “Periphery V: Djent is not a Genre”. I love it.
This has been recommended to me on YouTube for a while now, so today I finally watched it, and it’s pretty good. A metal band called Siren recorded some stuff in the 80’s, and then split up, not knowing they still have a fan base in Germany to this day. This documentary is about getting back together and flying to Germany to do a show. It’s not amazing or anything, but I thought it was quite enjoyable.
The algorithm is a funny thing. I had been listening to music.youtube.com for a while, and I was on a Rammstein kick. The algorithm feeds you more songs in the same genre. Somewhere about a year back it started slipping in some Sabaton. I had never heard of them. Bismark was pretty neat though, even if the lyrics didn’t quite flow.
I started listening to them more and more and started feeding the algorithm with Sabaton songs, even if I found them catchy but none of them great.
And somewhere around last week, after a whole year of being the algorithm’s bitch, it finally offers up Carolus Rex.
Holy fucking shit.
What other treasures lie in their discography?
Great pics, btw!
Not gonna lie, the title track of Carolus Rex is by far my favorite Sabaton song. I really enjoy basically all of The Last Stand from 2016, as well. Their recent stuff is still great, just a little, you know, samey. Which isn’t bad, but it’s easier to listen to the older songs I know by heart and can shout along to, hah.

Well the video mesmerized my cat.
He normally ignores videos, but he was starting intently, got up, flinch a couple times on transitions and sat watching the whole thing.
Both of the new Metallica songs are bangers. I’m 100% in on this record. Can’t wait.

New Jersey’s Hath play some pretty good blackened death, and last years’ album All That Was Promised ended up on a bunch of best-of lists. Bit of Ulcerate influence here I’m digging.
Mostly mid-paced but they know how and when to let loose. And there are solos!
Don’t think anyone posted this last year, I’m only just getting around to it now and it’s on the heaviest rotation. :)

Real good.
I love that they managed to get a proper “UGH!” in there.
I’m proud of our little scene. It’s weird because extreme metal, especially death metal, has traditionally been the realm of technical obsessives and brainiacs with genuine musical educations, but I’m still surprised by the professionalism and sophistication of this new generation of bands.
I feel liked Blood Incantation belongs among them, Starspawn definitely raised the bar for me, but also a band like Tribulation that started out being sort of a slightly more melodic Watain, but ended up adding epic gothic rock to the mix, to glorious effect.
There are a lot more bands who are hip to melody and epic grandiosity than there used to be, for sure.

Ah man that is always a highlight in any song and I loved it here too. :)
My love for it dates way back to Tom G Warrior on the early Celtic Frost albums, he was the ‘UGH!’ master in my developmental days. :)
Definitely more in the Rock category than Metal, but I think this is the best place to post it. Love the bridge and lead break in this one. Rival Sons have been putting out cool stuff, but this is a step up IMO.
