Recommend me some quality Metal

I used to think Live after Death was the best live Maiden, but I think Rock in Rio is better. They just really come across much better live.

Wow, Maiden re-released the Live after Death video on DVD. This is a must-get.

Opeth - Any album will rock your fucking socks off. This is the best band in metal right now. Melodic, dark, dual-vocals, and with amazing musical range.

Agalloch - Lists one of their inspirations as GY!BE, and it shows. Range surpassed only by Opeth. Two more studio albums, and these guys will be giving Opeth a run for their money.

Dethklok - Fake metal band, but some of the best straight up death/thrash you’ll ever hear.

In Flames - Great music, heavy and fast as hell. Great energy, and they put on a fucking great live show. Just don’t look too close at their lyrics, as honestly, they are some of the worst I’ve ever seen. Thankfully you can’t really understand the guy when he sings.

Soilwork - What started as thrash/death has evolved in to something far more mature, and drawing from far more of the musical spectrum. From obvious 80s influence to catchy riffs, you just can’t go wrong with anything from these guys.

Nevermore - Sort of a power / thrash hybrid. Strong vocals, good lyrics (often political). The first metal band I ever sat down and said “You know, these guys are better than Metallica.”.

Children of Bodom - Melodic death metal, harsh vocals, but lots of energy. Fast music. I honestly can’t get enough of these guys.

Dark Tranquillity - Sharing band members with Children of Bodom, this band is maybe a little heavier, a little more melodic, and they also experiment with a lot of vocalists. Females, singers, screamers, growlers. It’s all there. Their latest album, Fiction, is easily one of the best metal albums of last year.

Katatonia - I’ve been going through their back catalog, and their old stuff isn’t so great. But their most recent album, “The Great Cold Distance.” Is a tour de force, consisting of great vocals, this dark metal is melancholy as much as anything else, but it’s an album I love to listen to.

Sevendust - Hard to describe these guys. Almost hard rock as much as metal, but they’ve got some really great stuff, and a good vocalist.

This thread is like Christmas morning mixed with my birthday mixed with a punch to the face. Keep 'em coming, guys, this is awesome!

I think I’ve mentioned some of these before in other theads but here’s some stuff I like

Isis (as been mentioned) is cool and if you like them there is a band called Castle that does their thing better (which means heavier in my world).

Also for the Old Skool drone metal thing Asbestos Death, who later became Sleep.

Here is an amazing video of a SLEEP song set to Alejandro Jodorwsky’s “Holy Mountain”.

If you want superslow Asunder is…probably best experienced live in all their funeral heavyness.

An Asunder sound check - Impossible to appreciate their insane heaviness but you can get a feel.

Nile (again - just so you didn’t miss them).

At the Gates - If you’re into Slayer at all these nordic bastards are aaaaa-mmmaaaaazzzz-iiiinggg just check out their album Slaughter of the Soul - make sure you get the Expanded Edition its got some covers that will melt your face (Legion by Slaughterlord).

Here is the seminal track - GO!!!

Genghis Tron - Like nothing you’ve ever heard, super hard and fast with electronic dance breaks…give it some time and you will wear out Folding Road, their latest album.

I can’t find anything on the youtubes that isn’t kinda crappy sound wise, this is a band that really needs to be listened to with fidelity. Seek them out.

Pig Destroyer - Fast, brutal and chock full of hooky riffs.

Hey look! An actual video (good sound) of Gravedancer, speaking of hooks.

Between the Buried and Me - pretty accessible great musicians.

Ludicra

and/or Damad

  • female fronted black metal…all good.

They are playing Portland tonight…worth seeing?

Edit: found a few samples on the internets…never mind, heaviosity test failed.

there is a band called Castle that does their thing better (which means heavier in my world).
Link please, there’s entirely too many castles in metal for my search to be effective :/

Hmm, so far I can only find this EP (Electric Wolves), which is how I found them. They might not have anything else out, might have broken up…working on a masterpiece of staggering genius…dunno. They are from South Dakota, if that helps.

I’ll keep looking.

If you liked metallica, you must have listened to Anthrax

if you haven’t… you need to ASAP

get the album “The Greater of Two Evils” Fucking phenominal.

Yeah, 500 copies might be a bit tricky to find, me thinks. That’s too bad, sounded intriguing.

So far from the above listings I’m digging Agalloch, grabbed that Moonsorrow album (30 minute songs in this genre always pique my interest) and am following up on Meshuggah. This thread delivers :D

There are still some CD’s out there to be found - for example

Oh and I forgot a band -

NEUROSIS! Mighty mighty Neurosis. So Awesome. Try Through Silver in Blood or Enemy of the Sun. Their new album is good but those two albums…whew.

Also, Napalm Death’s 1994 Fear, Emptiness, Despair is one of my favorite albums ever.

In a huge way!

I actually never listened to Anthrax back in the day, but I have no idea why; they’re rad. I was checking out Sound of White Noise on iTunes today. That’s probably going to be my next purchase. Freakin great stuff, that is!

Yeah, one of my favorite metal bands, their music just pumps you up.

Sound of White Noise is a great album too.

Yeah, Agalloch and Neurosis were excellent picks here before, definitely not to be overlooked.

I was listening to Coheed & Cambria’s Silent Earth:3 again in the car today (rush hour), and it really is a tough album to pick signature songs from. Everything from the second track through Favor House is just great.

Anthrax just hired a new singer recently and will have a new record sometime this year. Can’t wait.

If you haven’t read my posts in that other thread, you should check those out.

If you liked that album, you’ll love “We’ve Come For You All” as well. I mentioned my love of “Sound of White Noise” on here once, that was recommended to me, and it kicked my ass into next week.

But by far the best Anthrax song of the Bush era was a single, only (afaik) released on the Last Action Hero Soundtrack: “Poison my eyes.”

Just as a caveat, I LOVE Metallica, but generally can’t stand Anthrax. I do like that Black House song though, off White Noise. I think that’s the name of the song, but it isn’t very Anthrax. Oh, and Keep It in the Family is pretty damn good too. But overall, I’m anti-Anthrax.

There’s lot’s of great suggestions here. You should try to find The Crown’s Speed of Darkness because it turns into a metal version of the Knight Rider theme, which is just cheesy awesome.

I’m with you there, and their GH2 contribution did not help my image of them at all. It’s just one of those things, like Van Halen’s popularity, that I will never get.

I updated my Original Post

to ad some youtube links.

And just because I am a giver here is one for those who don’t enjoy the brutality as much as I do. Two actually

Bad Brains - one of my favorite bands of allll time.

I Against I -

Pay to cum - with Leonard Nimoy

And the Deftones, probably unfairly lumped in with the nu-Metal dumbasses, these guys had some great albums.

Anyway here is a Deftones song Minerva set to Japanese Wrestler Taiji Ishimori
