I mean I tried slow as well. The fish just never gets closer. And the game tells you to reel quickly after the fish fights.
And with the keyboard, that’s exactly how you do it. You tire the fish, hit reel, hit reel faster button a couple times, fish gets caught in 10 seconds tops, 20 seconds if it fights again before you land it.

I’ve been fishing and once again I’ve got to disagree, although real fishing is certainly more relaxing. Yeah, I have no idea what the difference between your RDR fishing technique and mine is. I didn’t like it, actually. I mean, it’s a little more verisimilitudinous than just pressing a button, I guess, but like I said it made me fear for my stick. It’s been like a year or more (?! where does the time go) but I seem to dimly recall varying the speed of rotation. I wish I could be more helpful!
My favorite part of fishing in RDR2 was that it was pretty much totally optional outside of one or two missions. It was easy enough to find other activities to do that I enjoyed a lot more.
There are so many things you CAN do, but you don’t need to do most of them, so do what you enjoy.
Yeah, don’t recall fishing being difficult. Although I don’t think I once used reeling (spinning the RS) for getting the fish closer. It was a loop of moving the rod up with LS up (I think - been awhile), spinning RS to reel in while moving the rod back to right above the water, repeat. Moving the rod up was what moved the fish closer, not the reeling.
Of course, there was also fishing in Far Cry 5, so for all I know, I’m remembering that.

Wow, that sounds terrible. If you like the pad I strongly recommend you try the alternate config.

I’ll look for it, but honestly finding anything in the menus rarely ends well for me.
I forget where Save Game is half the time (because of course it’s not it’s own thing, who wants to save a game?).
Oh that reminds me of another pet peeve, the controls image just keeps swapping between functions let me swap it when I’m done looking at it ffs. I think it changes every 2 seconds!

I don’t mind the slower pace of the game at all. I just think it’s kind of silly that three hands of poker is like two days and meanwhile both Arthur and horse are starving or… something. It feels a little punishing to just stop and take it all in.
Controls were okayish on PS4, fine on PC.

It’s a metaphor for the perils of gambling addiction!
I dunno, I’m half and half on it. I’m more than fine with the limited fast travel - I like negative space and having to think about geography, and you can go on interesting digressions while on your way somewhere. It’s the parts where you just follow someone else while the talk and talk and talk that really should’ve been cutscenes. Less wordy, shorter cutscenes.
And narratively, it’s a lot of recycling the the same beats of Dutch HaS A pLAn, and oh no it goes wrong, but don’t worry, Dutch hAs a PlaN, but oh no it goes wrong, but don’t worry…
I do think the end of Arthur’s story is terrific, but there’s a couple of spins in the failure spiral they could’ve cut out without losing anything.

On fishing: I played on the PS4 and had no problems at all fishing. But I wasn’t spinning the reel trying to bring him in because that’s not how I do it in real life. I was raising the rod tip, paying attention to not breaking the line, then reeling in the loose line as I lowered the rod.
As for the pace I can see how it would bother some people. It’s perfectly paced for me, because I’m all about just exploring at my pace, taking my time, trying to discover every little thing (and there is SO much to discover in the world outside of missions.) Also, I don’t care at all about achievements or medals or whatever in games. I restarted and part way through Chapter 2 and I’ve got $1800 in cash and the sniper rifle and the carbine and some good sidearms. I want to get some more but I know I could play the whole game with what I’ve got, having played through it before. But I can see people who play games primarily to “win” and progress etc. might get frustrated at the slow pace.
I remember that my initial problem with fishing (which probably stemmed from being unfamiliar with how IRL reels work*) was that I was turning the stick the wrong way, so I could never land the fish. I wonder if that’s what you were doing, @ShivaX ?
*my mistaken intuition was that one would reel in a counterclockwise direction --assuming the crank was on the right side. Turns out I was wrong about that. Someone clued me in eventually.
And same here, @forgeforsaken . That drove me nuts.

I just remember there was one mission, story development out in the boat with two other characters that I started too late, so by the time we had this relaxing fishing going on it was too dark to enjoy it. I really wanted to take as long as I wanted to figure that out with them but… that darn clock never stops ticking.
Yeah, I suppose. I definitely had more time when I played it than I do now. It’s still the best thing Rockstar has ever done with the possible exceptions of Vice City and San Andreas.

I loved that mission. With them singing, right? Damn, I’ve gotta play this again sometime.

I don’t remember singing, but you get like 3-4 stories, maybe even more than that about what the gang had been up to. It’s one of the few scenes that I thought really showed that yes, this isn’t just a gang, it’s a family.

I feel like as you were rowing back Hosea started singing and Dutch and then Arthur joined in, but it’s been a while.

Nah the reel doesn’t click if you go the wrong way (I tried at one point).
For some reason I’m either not reeling them at all (which is what it feels like since the keyboard does it so fast and easy and gamepad seems to do nothing at all) or they’re pulling the line out on the struggle, despite me locking the reel and it just seems like nothing is happening.

Oh, you might be right about rowing back scene. I just remember liking the banter. The might be the one that had the race too before it.
There are some really strong moments in the game. If anything, I don’t think the game lets you spend enough time with those.
