Rest in peace, Peter Bogdanovich

Targets is literally my favorite Bogdanovich movie. It’s also my favorite movie starring Boris Karloff and my favorite movie Roger Corman produced.

It just came on cable and it’s still solid. Bogdanovich does a terrific job directing and playing the killer. His gunman is banal and a little bit pathetic while also being incredibly frightening. The way he just crumples after Boris Karloff bitch-slaps him is amazing. And kudos to Karloff too, who apparently was so impressed with the script after doing a couple of really garbage horror movies under contract for Corman that he let Bogdanovich use him for a couple extra days over his agreement.

I’m a bit late to this discussion, as usual, but the girlfriend and I are just finishing up my first ever (and her second) viewing of The Sopranos. Really great show, btw. I think we’ve got two episodes left.

Anyway, when Peter Bogdanovich made his first appearance in the show, I yelped, “Hey! Isn’t that–”

The girlfriend, who is a film buff (of films both old and new), said, “Yep.”

What a nice surprise.
