Return of the Western: Red Dead Redemption

Red Dead Revolver is getting a sequel. I never played the original, and it’s one of the rare Western-themed games that I’ve never tried. Is anyone looking forward to this one? Is the original Red Dead Revolver worth revisiting for someone who likes Western-themed games?

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Red Dead was great. It was a goofy tribute to the spaghetti Western, more a cousin than a sibling to Gun.

The game itself was this side of the border of the old generation, unfortunately. The levels were pretty small, threaded between loading screens, the control sometimes awkward and the hometown ‘open world’ felt tacked-on and unnecessary. Comparing it against Gun, it would look pretty primitive, mechanically. But I maintain much more fondness for it.

It had character, soul, a knack for environments - and the multiplayer was generally a chaotic mess of fun.

I can’t be certain it holds up as a game, but I just love the world and have been dying for more.

which looks to cast players not in the role of Revolver’s bounty hunter lead Red Halow, but instead a former outlaw named John Marston during the turn of the 20th century.

Shucks … No Red. Sort of makes the name silly.

I’d much rather have a sequel to Gun. Red Dead’s setting was ok, but the gameplay was pretty dull. You wander around town, visit shops and whatnot, then you go to get a mission. Getting the mission teleports you to the mission area. All of the missions I played consisted of killing everyone in the area. Once you do that, you’re teleported back to town.

I might’ve liked it better if I hadn’t played Gun first, but compared to Gun it felt very restrictive. I loved riding my horse across the plains in Gun, and there was none of that in Red Dead. However, there need to be more western games. Hopefully this will be good.

Well shadarr, they don’t mention much about the game, but they do mention that this time around it will be an “open world” rural environment, using the RAGE engine used in GTA IV and Midnight Club: LA. So it might be more like Gun than the first Read Dead game in that regard. And we can only hope they actually have more to do in their open-world environment than Gun did in theirs.

Edit: I went looking for their exact wording in the press release, here it is:

Red Dead Redemption will make use of Rockstar’s proprietary ‘Rockstar Advanced Game Engine’ (RAGE) to create an open-world environment for players to explore, including frontier towns, rolling prairies teeming with wildlife, and perilous mountain passes. Along the way, players will “experience the heat of gunfights and battles, meet a host of unique characters, struggle against the harshness of one of the world’s last remaining wildernesses, and ultimately pick their own precarious path through an epic story about the death of the Wild West and the gunslingers that inhabited it.

I enjoyed Red Dead, loved the music and the various unlockables. I hope that they can avoid the problems Gun had as an open world game.

Red had tons more atmosphere than Gun, and I liked it better (not saying I didn’t enjoy Gun). They occasionally nailed the Spaghetti Western vibe, which is, of course, the best Western vibe.

Plz use euphoria kthx.

Wooo!

Seems likely.

Aw yeah.

I loooooved GUN, especially the music and seeing the buffalo herds in the open meadow as the sun set, and riding the hell out of my horse. Never did play Red Dead Revolver, although what I heard of the music sounded appropriately “movie Western-like.” I did play Call of Juarez too and liked it, although the music didn’t come close to how good it was in GUN. The music to me is huge in setting the right mood. Also, there should be good mission-type variety. One thing I really didn’t like about the latest GTA, compared to San Andreas, was the real lack of variety in the type of most of the story missions: drive to destination, kill somebody or everybody-- BORING. Yeah, some missions can be of that type, but there are so many other possible types–they just got lazy or thought that the cool Euphoria engine, the graphics and the dating and man-dating would make up for it.

The soundtrack was ripped from Spaghetti Westerns, notably a number of tracks by Ennio Morricone.

Ultimately, the game captured that spirit beautifully - had lots of wacky, comic-book archetypes that all played out very differently … You didn’t just play one character through the whole game. That made the multiplayer more interesting as well.

The more I think about it (and listen to the music) if you’re interested at all in the concept you should give the original a rental. Particularly now that February has cooled off.

I loved Red Dead, so this is now very, very high on my most-wanted list. I still vividly remember having a lot of trouble with the quick-draw on a few bosses and then nailing the final boss with a first-try single shot to the head. It was glorious. I really enjoyed Gun, too, but something about Red Dead has left more of a lasting impression on me.

Chalk another one up in the “I loved Red Dead” column. But I gotta say… I’m a bit worried about the sequel. I for one really liked the bite-sized level structure of the first game, and the press release calls the sequel an open world game. No Grand Theft Western, please. And for the love of god, don’t let RDR be as serious as GTAIV.

Never played Red Dead but the open world description of Gun drew me in. I tend to agree with the consensus that Gun’s world was great but there was too little to do in it. I’d probably not be picking up the Red Dead sequel if it weren’t for the promise of an open environment either.

Now? Well, I reckon I have to. I’ve been into cowboy games since Boot Hill, one of the first tabletop RPGs after D&D, and loved the style and class of Lucas Arts “Outlaw.”

I wish someone would make a sequel to Lucasarts’ “Outlaws”. Fantastic game.

I think the term is Grand Theft Horsey. I also hope it isn’t serious. I also for once hope there isn’t a pc port since Rockstar knows Balls about porting.

I think we all should let go of the dream that the great lucasarts games of the 80s and early 90s will ever return in modern form. :(
