Okay, thanks guys.

At $7.50 it’s not a bad deal since you get the free month. Not sure, but I wonder if you can use this purchase to convert a trial account? If so, you could play for free for ten days before using the paid game to convert your account.

That’s a good question. I’ll have to do some research before I plop in the reg code (or however they do it).

EDIT: Okay, based on this thread (last post specifically) it looks like this should work.

I think the main method was losing players so there’s no market?

Though I have no real info on the player base now. I liked it for a few months before I moved on, but it didn’t really grab me for the long haul.

I just re-subscribed and had a couple of questions to anyone still playing:

  1. My mage (who was my main) is suddenly level 50, and I don’t believe I ever got him out of the low 40’s before I canceled my subscription. Anyone have that happen?

  2. My small, casual guild has disappeared. Does anyone out there have a casual Defiant guild that they would recommend? I’m open to transferring between shards.

So… haven’t played in months, but yay! email from Trion Worlds this evening:

et cetera.

sigh Not this crap again…

I swear to all that is supreme, these hackers are following me around. I just signed up for Rift like two days ago. I haven’t yet submitted credit card info though (still playing trial, haven’t entered acct code yet), and I used LastPass to generate a really screwed up password. So, at least I’m not sharing login info between my bank and my Rift account, because that would just be silly.

I have been curious about this one for a long time. The class system and the dynamic player quests (I think) makes it look like it could be fun. So, with listening to the some recent podcasts where Tom talks it up plus the new Rift Lite where 1-20 is free has me taking a peak finally.

Is there a Qt3 presence on any particular server/ side?

How does it work to buy it through steam if I like it; does it just stack onto my lite account?

Is “Ashes of History” an expansion upgrade or is it a collector’s edition?

I am not sure how buying through steam would work with your lite account, but I would imagine it works like any MMORPG out there. You most likely have a Trion account you are using and upon purchasing the game somewhere (would imagine Steam works this way also), you will get a code you can then attach to your Trion account giving you full access. Like most, you probably also have to sign up for a subscription plan also.

All of the Rift major updates in content have been free upgrades so far. I think the only things that aren’t were some mounts and costume items you get either through CE or direct buy or through long term account length rewards.

On paper, Rift really does seem to have just about everything you could want, even though many have drifted away at this point for one reason or another. My wife and I are still playing and have since release, although we haven’t been in much the last couple weeks. There really is a lot of things it does right including the multiple roles/classes you can switch between and the multiple ways you can get decent, good gear even though solo play (PvE and PvP) or crafting. They have even adjusted the ways you can get pvp gear faster with the (reduced player damage) stat sooner so you can compete better.

I am not sure if many others here are still playing or where. My wife and I are now on the Defiant side on Faeblight, the RP PvE server what pretty much is the merger of the other RP PvE servers. The population is still pretty healthy there now on both sides now that most have merged there.

We are still in the guild we started in with old friends from back in EQ/DAoC days. We have had somewhere between 8 and 15 active members since release and were doing 10-mans in guild that past month or so before I got busy with work and things. I am still the GM though, unless they booted me for being gone the last weeks haha! As a guild we have many who like to PvP with most rank 6-8 somewhere (ranks are now 1-40 now though with old rank 8s directly going to rank 38). We run 5-man dungeons at times, but mostly get together on schedule just on Sat mornings to try 10-mans or master mode dungeons. We certainly aren’t structured raiders and are mostly casual while enjoying as much content as we can.

My main issue with Rift was the tiny world and the lack of meaningful PvP. The combat system was a bit sluggish and not up to WoW standards, so that didn’t help either.

But for a strict themepark experience, it’s extremely competently done. It’s a very attractive package in pretty much every way. It’s the perfect WoW replacement, if you’re sick of that game - and you can accept the subpar combat and world size. It’s NOT a good game if you’re tired of the WoW formula, however.

There’s one thing about it that’s pretty universal for Gamebryo-based games - and that’s the awkward way your character animates across the terrain. It’s especially noticable when you’re on a mount. It just doesn’t feel natural to me. It’s almost like having a dream where you’re trying to run, but you can’t quite make it happen. I think that’s a relatively common dream?

I guess that sounds pretty pedantic and minor, but it’s a big deal for me. I really need to feel “connected” to my character and to the environment when I interact with stuff. I want to feel “liberated” when I move around, and especially during intense combat situations. In Rift, I feel more like the puppet master than the character - and that’s not good.

I only played it for a couple of hours. It was very pretty. I thought the lore was pretty generic, though.

The one cool thing they did with this “Lite” version is attach it to your old accounts. It’s nice to be able to come back and try it for 20 levels without having to make a separate account.

Is it free to play up to level 20 now? When I tried it a few months ago it was the typical 7 or 10 day trial then you’re done.

That’s what really killed Rift for me. It’s quite possibly the most boring, dry, uninteresting MMO I’ve ever played. Aside from that, Rift is a really solid MMO.

Sorry for the derail, but that happens to me in dreams all the time, and I HATE IT.

I have a similar one all the time where something is coming down the hall to get me and if I could just get this damn door open I could get away from it, but the knob keeps sliiiiiiippping through my fingers. Very frustrating dream.

Just got an email for RIFT Lite, RIFT is free to play for the first 20 levels.

That’s cool, I may give it another look.

Just resubbed after not playing since, oh, nearly a year. Any recommendations on a good pvp class combo to start out with? I still have a beastmaster I leveled to 14 – is that any good?

So, what does everyone think about the announcement of the new Rift expansion:

This fall, players of Trion World’s award-winning massively multiplayer online role playing game, Rift™, will face the dragon lord Crucia and her army of enchanted followers in Rift: Storm Legion™, the game’s first expansion pack. Storm Legion will feature an increased level cap, two new continents, additional souls, and a new storyline that is sure to mesmerize and challenge even the most seasoned Rift players.

I might be giving this one another try (the 4th?) if I’m not too sucked in by GW2, MOP, Planetside 2, and/or possibly TSW.

I really have to applaud Trion for their dedication to Rift, despite some of its shortcomings and especially in the face of all the competition.

Unfortunately they had their chance and blew it, everyone I know and my guild moved on. But I suppose they manage to stay in business, much like Cornered Rat with WW2OL so… who knows. They have steadily added a lot of the content that would have kept me playing , but I suppose it is to late.

Only MMO I have ever returned to (repeatedly) has been LOTRO.

It is a good thing they are still in the business though, catching up and sometimes innovating… hopefully that will encourage other mmo makers (unlike EA/Bioware) to also add new stuff instead of using a mold from around 2003.
