I’ve only played sporadically the past few weeks and I haven’t paid much attention to the chat, so maybe it is the new folks coming in. Which is unfortunate because the community had seemed to be generally helpful and on topic in chat for the most part.
According to the Rift twitter feed, anyone owning the game can now play free, no need to wait until the 12th.
They’ve fixed it now so that however much you spend on the Test Shard you get exactly double when F2P goes live. I figure $50 for $100 worth of Rift Bux was a pretty sweet deal, so I bit. If the prices stay the same, that’s a lot of mounts and extra-large bags worth.
The wife and I did $100 each, which translates to 18.5k credits. Doubling will come out to 37k each. I figured we’d end up buy credits anyway, so why not pre-spend it and get twice the credits? We both have our 24 month achievements, which will give 168k loyalty right off the bat. Short trip to the 180k tier. That will basically mean 2 free dimensions, couple of free mounts (110% speed), etc… for every character as long as the game’s still around.
We’re prepaid patrons until April 2014. Shouldn’t need to invest any more into the game for quite a while. And dang, as I’m typing this I’m realizing just how much we’ve just spent on the game. Between the 1-year sub in April and the $100 credit purchase, we’re $220 in, each. The joys of F2P

Wait. What is all this double credits, 48 month, tier yada yada stuff? I have not been watching the game much at all as it was a semi-fun gaming experience to do as a couple, but the subscription thing killed it as we didn’t play it enough to warrant adding to the monthly bills. Although I recently did the Raptr thing to unlock expansion content, I was unaware of anything else and am not opposed to tossing some cash at it now if it will reap longer term rewards that we can enjoy at our own pace.

Hmmm, not that I know of.
The double points thing: If you log onto the Public Test Shard and buy points (and then spend them all in the store) you’ll get double the amount you buy credited to your account on Wednesday when F2P goes live. It’s a little bit of a pain, but if you buy $50 in points today you get $100 on Wednesday. And $100 seems to be quite a lot of points.
There’s also Veteran’s bonuses (mostly mounts and some pets and a few other nice things), but I can report that you get credited for veteran’s tier stuff for buying and spending points. I’m not sure exactly how many, but buying and spending $50 worth on the PTS got me part way into the 2nd Tier of rewards.

It’s a good deal, but I kinda suspect I’m unlikely to care enough about their store stuff to worry about doubling points.

The doubling stuff is over. PTS shut down at 8:00 a.m. PDT this morning. The F2P patch hits the live servers tomorrow.
I sat down and figured out what I’m getting for my patron dollars. I realized that I’m better off buying credits directly and forgetting about the patron pass. Unfortunately I’m prepaid until May of 2014 :) Oh well, spose the 10% discount on all purchases will help. Won’t cover the cost of the sub, but it will help stretch the credits.
Oh man. I hate how much money I’m gonna spend on this game on costumes alone.

After the dynamic combat in Tera and Neverwinter, auto-targetting feels surprisingly disconnected and remote.
I reached L60 this a.m. on my rogue and primary character.
613 credits for a 150% mount? 13 for a fourth soul? Yes, please. That left me with the in game mount money I had been saving up to buy augments for crafting and whatnot off the AH. MY SO - who has played a lot longer and had about a 1/3 more credits than I - gifted me a bow (and the upgrade piece) for my birthday. Gotta dig gaming girlfriends* :)
Also, I did so much extraneous stuff in my wanderings I didn’t see most of the late 50’s content yet, either. I usually have a bad case of alt-itis, but there’s still so much to do on my main character not sure I can find the time to play my alt. So far really glad I returned.
*We’ve been together for 15 years, so not sure girlfriend is quite the right label lol.

I just started playing this, and the first impression is very good. It looks like an immense game with plenty to do, and much of it well done. The community is also a step above the dregs you bump into in WoW or NW chat.
That won’t last long.
Don’t get me wrong, I expect (or at least hope) free Rift is successful. The initial crush won’t last, though.
