Agreed, that would be nice.

Having “fun”, playing an MMO again. How can this be?
Hmm, never had a problem swimming underwater; works the same as it does in WoW, for me at least. Could be a settings thing? Dunno.
My mage is 36 and I agree, the calling is certainly doable in PvP. But…the type of PvP really mattes. In Warfronts, I can always find a role, mostly as Chloro but sometimes as pure Pyro for crispy fun. But in the wild, unless I get the drop on someone or am with my usual couple of friends (warrior/rogue), I’m usually toast. I generally solo as Necro for the pets, and I can occasionally survive a ganking by going Lich on someone. If I’m in Chloro my survivability is better but my time to kill mobs is too long. Pyro is fun but until I can level up the PvP soul a bit too fragile for 1v1.
Hoppy does rule. I want one.

So I ponied up for this game, but I haven’t played an MMO in a long time and never got that into them. Any tips for a person who:
Hasn’t played many MMOs
Doesn’t know anyone playing rifts (other than I guess you guys!)
Doesn’t have a lot of time to play (a few hours a week)
Can’t play more than an hour or so at a time
Any suggestions as to class? Server? Etc?
Thanks very much…

Wolfsbane, Defiant, work out what sort of playstyle you want and we’ll tell you the souls you need :)

Can anyone explain how mob ranks work? I’ve seen mobs that are elite (there’s an icon below the name that says so) and I’ve seen some with spikes around their portraits. I always assumed that the spikes meant the creature was elite or epic but it’s not always the case. I guess my google-fu failed me cause I didn’t find any explanation for this everywhere…
I don’t know if I have an answer that short for ya, but here are some questions you may want to ask yourself first.
-
PvE or PvP server? You typically get more excitement and more frustration on a PvP server. If you’re not sure or you don’t care, go to a PvE server.
-
Make sure your server has a decent population. On my server - Sunrest (RP-PVP) - I don’t have to worry about being lonely. On some servers, they’re a virtual ghost town. Server choice is often more important than guild choice. With your casual play style, you’re going to want a really, really busy server.
-
Don’t worry about who you already know. If your playtime is that limited, you’ll need to make an effort to get into a guild that supports your casual playstyle and get to know those folks. Being in a guild where most everyone is a level 50 achiever and you’re not is just as lonely as not being in a guild at all. If you come to Sunrest (Guardian), I’ll introduce you to the largest Guard guild on the server.
-
Defiant or Guardian? Not much difference. If you’re on a PVP server and choose Guardian, expect to be outnumbered. That’s going to make it more challenging to level up.
-
For your first character, I’d suggest a rogue unless you like seeing spell animations. The stealth/sneak mechanic makes it easier to solo level and you have the choices of going tank/offhealer/ranged DPS/melee DPS. It’s easier if you’re in PUG battlegrounds too. But one nice thing about Rift is that with so many souls to choose from in any given class, you can usually find a playstyle you like. So feel free to experiment!
-
Remember that Rift tends to start out slowly. What may seem like a boring class at level 8 is probably far, far more fun to play at level 20.
It doesn’t work that way for me, but I am pretty curious why devs have to keep putting awful underwater quests in their MMOs. Here’s a tip: collection quests are already tedious and putting them underwater makes them worse. Enough already.
Huh. I’m rocking the default settings, so I don’t know what’s going on. My little dude just would not go below the surface of that lake. Did you guys change the mouselook functionality at all?
Nope, and Rift swimming worked just like WoW swimming for me.
Nope, and Rift swimming worked just like WoW swimming for me.
This sounds stupid, but are you sure you were deep enough to actually swim? I’ve had it where I wasn’t quite at the right depth and the game doesn’t let you swim in shallower water.
If it’s a particular Gloamwood quest, that lake has a bunch of shallow spots where it’s not easy to swim.
The air vents, which I hadn’t seen in other MMOs are a nice touch to make them a little less painful. You click on them and they give you 2 minutes of air plus when that ‘buff’ is done, starts the air timer back from the top.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen an elite mob that didn’t have spikes. Then there are rare mobs, that have a diamond or something simlar over their name.
Spikes do always mean that the mob is elite.
Having said that, not all epic mobs are equally hard. Similarly, some non-epic mobs are much tougher than others of their level.

Hmm, I’ve seen “spiked” mobs that really didn’t feel elite at all. On the other hand, I’ve seen elites that didn’t have spikes. Is there a difference between epic and elite?
I am lvl 38 and I’ve seen like 3 underwater quests and one of them didn’t even require swimming, one could collect stuff from the beach. Outrageous!

Thanks JM and Blackadar!
I definitely want to be on a PVP server so I think I will try Sunrest. Much appreciated.
Are you saying that whole post is sarcastic?
Sunrest is one of the busiest servers out there, but there hasn’t been a queue lately. Just look me up online (same username as this one) if you need help or want information about the guild I’m in.
