See, I’d rather they avoid large coefficients on gear. That keeps skill in the equation. One of my biggest problems with WoW nowadays is that gear >>>>> skill, simply due to how much of a massive upgrade one piece of gear is over another. Keep the gear increases low and you allow for more skill to come through.

Or in my case, lack of skill. ;)

I can’t promise anyone that I can get them into the Sentinels. I’m not in charge of admissions. But so long as you’re 18+, I’m more than happy to point you in the right direction and vouch for Qt3 folks if they ask me my opinion. But I don’t think anyone here is going to have a problem getting in. Considering that Guards are outnumbered on Sunrest, there’s some safety in numbers having a large guild.

Well, it’s interesting to see the different opinions on mages, that’s for sure! I’ve played mages in a lot of MMOs, and yes, I am clearly not very talented, because my experiences have been that mages are generally crappy in 1v1 PvP. Stun lock or the equivalent, interrupts, etc. I’ve seen good mages but sadly I’ve never been able to be one, not at least in terms of being an effective 1v1 PvPer. I think one’s opinions, as well, are skewed by one’s personal experiences (duh!), so the stuff James points out I really can’t validate, but I don’t doubt that from his perspective it’s all true.

Generally, I’ve found mages have long cast times and fragility issues, but part of the trouble may well be that I’m simply not quick enough. I played a mage in WoW, fire/ice/arcane, you name it, and I was never able to do all the things everyone told me a mage could do. Ditto my warlock in EQ2, or my Wizard in DAOC, etc. I still love them though.

This has to be one of the greatest wow pvp myths out there. Yes two equally skilled players, one with better gear, the outcome is obvious. Take a frost mage or an unholy dk, or X class that isn’t super faceroll that knows what they are doing in crap gear and they will help a team termendously more then a scrub in EPIXS.

We’re not really having the WoW gear vs skill discussion in this thread, right? Right?

Oh my. Can we perhaps not have the silly ‘balance’ discussions here? there’s many forums where your dissertation on why mages/rogues/clerics need buffs will be welcome. Let’s leave here for foolish enthusiasm and naïveté.

I like the game alot, I’m level 50 and I play a rogue. It’s a fun game. It is not robot Jesus.

Edit: yes buffs/nerfs were needed, whatever. Let’s just play for a bit k?n

I play a rogue, too. It’s pretty fun. I like teleporting into dudes and stabbing them in the face.

People who feared being hacked will be pleased to know that, as of today, Rift allows the use of an authenticator:

Although it looks like it’s Android only right now (no doubt the iPhone App will take a few days to be approved for the App store):

Increase the security of your Trion Account using the RIFT Mobile Authenticator. If you have not already done so, please visit the following links to download the Authenticator.

For Android devices, click here to download from the Android Market.

Please enter the Serial Key generated by the Authenticator in the field below. You will also need to answer the Secret Question associated with this account and fill in the CAPTCHA field.

As for what we get: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.trionworlds.mobile.auth

The RIFT Mobile Authenticator is an optional application that provides an additional layer of authentication for your Trion account and helps prevent unauthorized account usage. Every time you launch RIFT, you will use the RIFT Mobile Authenticator to generate a unique serial code to enter into the login screen in addition to your password.
Using the RIFT Mobile Authenticator is easy:

  • Load the app onto your mobile device
  • Follow the in-app directions to connect the app to your Trion Account
  • Sign in to RIFT with a more secure account

In addition to enhanced security, linking the RIFT Mobile Authenticator to your account will earn you the in-game title “The Ironclad.”
NOTE: An Internet connection is required for use. For more information about the RIFT Mobile Authenticator, visit http://www.RIFTgame.com/authenticator

Neat!

I’m more than happy to have the WoW Gear vs. Skill debate elsewhere (and I’ll win, having played WoW from beta through WotLK), but notice I didn’t say anything about team dynamics.

I like the authenticators, but they need to roll out the hardware for it too. Not everyone has a personal Android or IPhone or even wants one.

Blackadar, I am returning to sunrest…character name is Azaria…could I get in the Sentinels?

Just hit me up in-game and I’ll point you in the right direction.

Actually, enough people have asked…

Server: Sunrest (RP-PVP)
Faction: Guardian
Guild: http://www.the-sentinels.net/

It’s one of the largest guilds on the server and quite active. 18+ only. Message me in game for help. Hit that website and apply - it’s not a long application process. Put my name as a referral if you want. Hope to see you in Rift!

EG has an interview with Scott Hartsman. Worth a read to see what they are looking at for future updates: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-03-30-rift-an-mmo-success-story-interview

Guild Bank will definitely be a nice to have. Hope it can make it into 1.2 or whatever the next patch is called.

Hey me too except I’ve played through Cata! So do I auto win da forumz?

Hopefully these changes bring the souls in line with each other a bit more. Says something for the game that I’m super bummed that I have to wait a whole 4 hours of patching time to get in and keep playing. Though I’ll have to look at the changes live and figure out what to do with with my RB/Reaver.

Has anyone else explored the puzzles in cairns in each zone? Really rewards exploration or using a FAQ! Just doing the lake of solace ones I got one epic 4 blues and a handful of greens all scaled to level 30 for my class.

The early zones appear to cap at 30 the mid zones at 35. At least according to this handy guide.

http://www.kfguides.com/rift/puzzlesguide.php

I tried to get to the ones in Stonefield, but I could not figure out how. The guide I saw explained the puzzles, told me where they were, but neglected to tell me how to get to them.

I believe Riftjunkies has videos of how to get to the puzzle sites (if not videos, then maps).

The patch is 450MB. Better get downloading a bit before you intend to play.

This part of the patch notes makes my day:

  • After merging your group with another public group, you can now un-merge it! Look for the menu option to Unmerge Group if you were the party leader of a group that has been merged.

I duo with my wife a lot and this has been a pain until now.

Also, in game video recording and uploading to Youtube to complement the Tweeting. They are riding the social wave. :)

The one thing that really impresses me about Trion Worlds is the way they’ve been essentially competent. Maybe that speaks volumes about the low standards we gamers have, but seriously, from design to launch to live they’ve been doing a really professional job overall. Features people want are being rolled out relatively speedily and in a controlled fashion. Changes are happening, but not too fast or too slow so far. If they can also add content and keep their momentum going, they should be pretty successful I’d think.

If you have an android phone, there’s a mobile authenticator app now.

I know. ;)
