It’s not really that bad. I don’t have much patience lately with learning intricate design and I figured it out. Although during my run through, I didn’t notice I had a dude with the ‘firebug’ trait and I couldn’t figure out why I had to keep putting out fires.

I finally got inspired to try this game again, my god what I time sink. But in the days of Covid, I have time. It had been more than 18 months since I played last itand I had completely forget about the damn infections. I was attempted to set up a defense when the spawn faster than I expected and 1 KIA, 4 severely wounded, 1 moderately wounded, and my pacifist was the only unhurt guy. I did kill all of them but they have already respawn 2 new critters and there are 3 hives.

I guess its time to reload and see if I can prevent the infection. The old saying, when you are in hole stop digging applies to nothing more than building an underground base in Rimwold LOL.

I like the changes to 1.2 but didn’t get the DLC. It seems me that didn’t have as many options/difficulty leve to start the game, in version 1.0. Is that correct?

I’ve also being playing a lot of Oxygen Not Included but ultimately I just don’t think I have the patience or interest in an almost pure building game. There are many things in ONI, I like better. A more intricate infrastructure plumbing, power, oxygen production etc, more interesting map goodies (aka Geysers) and a bit better ranching/farming systems, and better graphics But I love the stories in Rimwold, and the combat I think that’s why I ultimately prefer it.

Perhaps, try Dubs Bad Hygiene mod for Rimworld. Adds plumbing.

I have a love hate relationship with plumbing (actually more with ventilation) It is cool when everything efficiently goes to the right place. It is also why I quit being an pure engineer pretty early in my career, getting things up an running was pretty easy. But really engineer involves worrying about the end case, what happens the airpressure is exceeded and the whole system clogs up. The level of frustration is constant in Oxygen Not Included, so not having it in Rimworld is good thing for me!

Ha! I get that.

The beauty of mods … don’t get what you don’t want.

I think I’ll explore mods once I’ve actually made it off the planet.

I thought I was completely screwed and was going to have to either restart or spend a lot of energy fighting bugs. Fortunately, just stopping digging sufficient, and I now I’m up to 10 people.

Now I have a strategy question for you. I have exhausted my component on the map, fortunately I was able to trade for a lot and I think I can research my way fairly quickly to fabrication. I can probably also trade for some the same for plasteel in the short run.

The next shortage I’m pretty sure will be steel and I’m curious what people strategy is for getting more steel. I still have plenty on the map and one 16 skill miner who isn’t great at anything else, but suspect in 2 years max I’ll be mined out.

One idea is to trade for it I’ve got lots of skilled farmers, plenty of rich soil and my crafting is getting respectable. Could I buy enough from bulk trades and trading posts. I fear there just won’t enough supply.

Option 2 is deep drilling, but I understand it is pretty slow and also triggers bugs.

Option 3 is long range scanning, where I could just send an expedition to strip mine the place for 10 days.

What do people prefer?

Here are the mods I have. Dinosauria, Plasteel Surgery are the only ones that change gameplay (maybe common sense too, but it removes some boring micro). The rest don’t change gameplay, just QoL mods, and can be added without crashing the save game.

In regards to the steel, I’d try a mix of 1 and 3. Just bring pack animals as steel is heavy. Probably try to get the space trading going as well as some starships are bulk traders and have lots of steel or you can ask a local group to send a bulk trader to the colony.

What you mentioned, plus mech invasions. They’ll drop steel, and often components. You should see more of them as you get more established.

I finally launched a ship after, 500 hours of play and zillion restarts. I’m not sure I’ll do that again, I may try to go make the voyage to the ship. I had really hard time getting enough plasteel to build the damn thing, and then as it was almost completion, I game upon a bunch and never had serious shortage again.

Has anybody played through a campaign since the royalty DLC?. It seems like a fun addition

Edit: I should add I didn’t have a single relationship in the game. I was kind of bummed, no gay or straight hookup of any type. I must say it was easier not to deal with the depression of the jilted lover.

Play through? Not sure I understand these words in regards to Rimworld. :) Started several, yes.

I think it does a very good job of adding some core interesting content that doesn’t overlap all the mods that are out there. Having to entertain nobles, and eventually keep your own noble happy, is an engaging plate to add to the others you are spinning, and the new quests types and structures are good bones for later development.

It also adds significantly to the lore. That may not matter to you if you are playing with cat girls in French maid outfits and Cthulhu mods, but the Dune-like neofeudalism is now a statement about the game world from Tynan.

What I found fun for a while after the one time I launched a ship, was to let the sim run, and then try to make a start at a second ship with the ppl who randomly populate the map after you launch. I never really made much progress- the wealth on the map draws threats that are a bit much for a single bleeding naked person to manage. But it felt just on the edge of my ability to do. Someone better at the game probably could launch a second ship given time.

I’m really like the DLC, especially since my latest playthrough has given me a new objective
farming Thrumbos!!

This was my first (serious ) tribal start in a standard 40/60 Temperate forest area. I started off with Randy Random, at the strive to survive level, but switched back to Cassandra because Randy was either too boring or way too hard.

I had a inspired taming event, which I was pretty bleh about because I already had lab retrievers, donkeys (but no females) and increasing numbers of Alpaca, Boomalopes, Muffalos, and Yaks and I didn’t really need any more. Then I had a couple of Thrumbos wander in. I don’t have the technology to even make guns yet, although I’ve picked up an assortment of guns, and bought an assault rife.
I figured taming a Trumbo would make it easy to harvest the fur, but just for grins I tried to train guarding and attacking. I had 3 guys with 12+ training skill so it wasn’t as hard as thought to get her trained. So that’s how I got Fluffy.

Trumbo’s turn out to be awesome tanks as you’d expect, I had Fluffy go after a hive, she didn’t do it by herself but she was the main fighter and ended up with only medium pain level and no serious damage.

Then a few months let another inspired training event, and then within a couple of days I got my 3rd Thrumbo event, this time with three Trumbo. Two of them had bad backs, and but 3rd was young male in perfect health. So I recruited him and named him Tebow. Fluffy and Tebow are pretty awesome combo they made pretty short work of Mech cluster although Fluffy got pretty beat up.

I’ve been watching Tebow and Fluffy they hang around each other a lot, but so far no Thrumbo sex. Thrumbo are pregnant for a year, then take four years to fully mature, so I didn’t really anticipate a huge army of them. Still I’m looking forward to the joyous event.

This game never goes on sale does it?

Occasionally you see a couple % off

It’s been 10% off I think a couple times now.

https://isthereanydeal.com/game/rimworld/info/

Which points out it’s on sale now at fanatical: https://www.fanatical.com/en/game/rim-world

If anyone is interested in watching youtube play-throughs of Rim World, I have a recommendation: Francis John’s Tribal Wizards. He’s at the end-game now, but I recommend the entire playthrough as it’s a really creative way to play the game that utilizes the abilities gained from meditation and/or from the Royalty. No research either.

Looks like this one is still getting updates, free at that!

Well, there goes another 100 hours of my life

Only 100? I am mildly jealous.

Though he still hates kill boxes, heh. Still doubt they can be killed, they will just be adapted.

Hehe

I am frustrated by that. He keeps undermining defensive structures in favor of more close-combat… But I find that to me the most frustrating way to play. Would prefer if he embraces some of the tower defense.

A mechanoid cluster when you have 2 bolt action rifles isn’t exactly fun.
