RIP Gardner Dozois

The influential sf writer and editor Gardner Dozois has died aged 70. I don’t pretend to know what makes a good editor but the slew of awards and nominations Dozois received must be one indication of it.

Rest in peace. I have several of those best of the year anthologies he edited.

He was one of GRRM’s closest writing friends. I have several of his anthologies for this reason as well.

Oh shit! While working the graveyard shift at a gas station I read all his best of the year anthologies starting from 1984 to 2005 or whenever I stopped (as well as some more recent ones). I just recommended one of his recent anthologies (The Book of Swords) in the book thread.

But most importantly, one of his short story anthologies got me into reading sci fi again after many years of not reading it. This one:

This may be the single best sci fi anthology, ever, especially for newbies to the genre.

:(

Oh wow. :(

I always look forward to his Year’s Best Anthologies and his summaries of the high and low notes of the year. I guess this will be his last one. :(
