So that’s how they’re going to make back the lost album sales…

FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS? FUCK YEAH!

Also, while the content of your link is generally true, the Joystiq article is pretty misleading. Joystiq actually quotes the article as saying Sub Pop is planning to convert their “entire catalog” to RB. The Rolling Stone article specifically says “part of the catalog”. The RS article also doesn’t say anything about new Sup Pop releases automatically being released as DLC.

The reality is Sub Pop doesn’t have their hands on the tools yet and thus has no idea how much time and money are going to be required to do this. It looks like they ideally want to make as much of their library available as possible, but this whole idea is brand new and nobody really knows what they’re getting into.

Here’s the actual source of this story, so you don’t have to look at third hand reports making up a bunch of bullshit: http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2009/07/22/nirvanas-bleach-on-rock-band-sub-pop-looks-to-code-catalogs-into-playable-tracks/

So let’s talk about the future of Rock Band.

What’s the future of the franchise, and cross-compatibility, if you’re rolling out these tools to allow third parties to create content and submit it for approval? I can’t imagine they’d roll out a Rock Band 3 that wasn’t compatible with existing content, which leaves two options:

  1. There will be a Rock Band 3, with some small enhancements and features (stars patch plz), compatible with all previous games and DLC.

  2. There won’t be a Rock Band 3 – they’ll just leave Rock Band 2 as the main game, and they’ll release their upgrade patch down the road.

I have to believe it’s option #1 – it wouldn’t take much effort to create a RB3 with some minor enhancements, and you know MTV would obviously love a new SKU for the holidays. So once the Beatles stuff is out, I’d expect a RB3 by the end of the year.

The road from RB to RB2 was paved with minor enhancements, and it sold well, so I don’t see an RB3 being too much of a hard sell. Unless they surprise everyone with a new instrument or radically different gameplay, what Harmonix should consider doing is dropping the price on the core game. It’s a platform and not just a game anyway, right?

They could also do something really crazy and ship the sequel with the enhancements but without any songs built in and lower the price even more.

By the end of the year. As in 2009? That’s crazy talk Sluggo. Are you high or something? Wouldn’t they want to promote something like that well in advance? They’ve already got Rock Band: Beatles coming out in September, and Lego Rock Band coming out in November. Where exactly would you slate yet another Rock Band game in there? December? That doesn’t make any sense to me whatsoever.

I’d really like to see them add separate notes for cymbals. Even if they don’t go back and re-chart all the old songs, having that put in for all songs going forward would be awesome.

I thought they already said RB3 was not coming this year?

Anyways, RB3 around August/September of '10, with the Beatles stuff then transferable to the main platform.

I would love that, but it’ll never happen. Too many people don’t buy DLC to separate the content out too much.

with the Beatles stuff then transferable to the main platform.

LOL. I find your beliefs fascinating!

But yeah, RB3 sometime in '10.

Did you guys notice that creators.rockband.com references the next Rock Band 2 patch? That’s the mythical “stars” patch, looks like they’re pushing all the changes to enable RBN into the next patch, which explains why it’s taking so long.

Have there been any official indications that the patch includes the stars fix, or is that just fan wishing?

I don’t think MTV sees Lego Rock Band as a proper SKU in the same vein as Rock Band – it seems like more of a kid-targeted game, which leaves an opening in their holiday schedule for another title.

And not only would it not take much work to add a few enhancements to Rock Band 2 and release a new game this holiday, but it would probably sell pretty well, especially if it’s a full game with 60+ songs. You know there are plenty of Rock Band fans to whom Beatles or Lego will not hold much appeal, but RB3 would.

Of course, I could see MTV planning on pushing the Beatles like crazy through the holidays, with RB3 indeed scheduled for 2010, but I don’t think some kind of official Rock Band “platform” release this year (whatever it’s called) is as crazy as people might think.

It’s totally crazy, and YOU’RE crazy if you think RB3 is coming this year.

Plus, Harmonix flat out said no RB3 this year. But whadda they know!

This week:

Blink-182 “Down”‘
Blink-182 “Feeling This”
Blink-182 “The Rock Show”
Damone “Out Here All Night”
KISS “100,000 Years (Live)”
KISS “Deuce (Live)”
KISS “Parasite (Live)”
Weezer “My Name is Jonas”
Weezer “Pork and Beans”
Weezer “Undone – The Sweater Song”

6 must buys in there.

Huh. Okay. A few of those are excellent. I’m not so sure about Undone (I wonder what they’re going to do for the vocal track during the long talky parts with multiple dudes), but My Name is Jonas is awesome, and I’ve always thought that The Rock Show would be a good Blink-182 song for the game.

Rock Band 3 has stringed guitars, and won’t come out this year.

Christ. If I never hear the sweater song again it’ll be too soon. It was basically on an endless loop for an entire year in college (not my choice, i mean just freaking everywhere, suffusing the entire campus like phlogiston). I’ll probably still be forced to buy and play it for other people though.

Sometimes I wonder if they purposely pick the absolute wrong songs…there are so many great Kiss songs that would be great- so many of their original songs would be seemingly lots of fun.

These are OK but certainly not the ones I would pick…then again, they must know more than I do.

Yeah, the KISS selections are strange. I wonder if the bands just refuse to give up the good songs or something…
