Woot for Night Ranger!

And, just got through playing Tom Petty… best live DLC on Rockband.

saving the more popular well known songs for the sequel is a good idea

I’m preeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeetty sure Harmonix isn’t retarded.

This says to me that they have even bigger songs queued up.

Though, given Harmonix’ previous eclectic choices in RB1 and RB2, I’d trust (and personally welcome) their good musical taste, too. Songs don’t need to be “big” to be fun and musically interesting to play.*

  • addendum: this does not explain “Visions”, “So What’cha Want”, or “Cool for Cats”, but I always write off 5% of the setlist for any fake plastic rock game.

OK This song is awful, but I love the lead guitar playing. The other song I like a little bit better, and wow, pretty impressive playing on those solos live.

Oh yeah, the song was typical '80s cheese. By law, every hair band had to have at least one song praising The Almighty Power Of Rock. But the guitar parts were so good you just ignored how dumb the lyrics were.

That’s true. For a time, we weren’t sure if you COULD still rock in America. Thankfully, bands like Night Ranger and Journey were there to remind us! Starship did their part, too.

Don’t forget the requirement of a big-haired blond girl doing a Go Go’s-esq dance routine.

BTW, what was the “new content” that my XBox 360 version of RB2 downloaded yesterday (hadn’t fired it up for at least a month)? Just stuff to make it work with the latest iteration of Live, or more than that?

The Lips Mic / Stars patch? Dunno.

My X360 was offline for a month or so, so I actually just DL’d the stars patch myself the other day in anticipation of the Night Ranger epicness. I was disappointed to see how it handles the star stuff.

It’s nice that I can sort by stars, but having to replay everything, and not being able to see star ratings when you have different sorts selected is a bit of a letdown. The Lego Rock Band approach would have been nice.

Foo Fighters need to get on the ball and release “Hell” for Rock Band 2. Then I’d be content, I think.

Lego Rock Band is practically RB3, and it’s going to be hard to go back. It’s got a lot of minor improvements that really add up, the same way RB2 wasn’t revolutionary but was still miles better than RB1. Although the stars thing is really just going back to how things were in RB1.

Are you seriously whining for more Dave Grohl? Seriously? Like, not sarcastic at all?

Are you seriously whining for more Dave Grohl? Seriously? Like, not sarcastic at all?

Sure. I’d pay for every single Foo Fighters song if they’d release them. Day of release, in my collection, done.

Yeah, I’m on the Dave Train myself. I just love Foo Fighters songs, and they’re always fun to play to me. Even if I’m still mentally used to the GH2 version of Monkey Wrench’s chart. It’s just THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST of two.

Erm, am I mistaken or is it in Lego Rock Band even worse than in RB2 postpatch regarding the stars? I played almost only Story Mode until now, but in Free Play the scores I got are switching with the stars I got every few seconds. Would be cool enough, IF the stars were in any way tied to the instrument and not to the song. I couldn’t care less about which songs I have five- or goldstarred without the information of “with what”.

Also, no way to see bass scores outside the leaderboards.

TBRB is so much better regarding scores (including the minileaderboards) it isn’t even funny.

I expect Beatles is more emblematic of future RB3 design than Lego Rock Band.

LRB is nice, and all, but it’s clearly a lego-ized version of the RB2 UI, not a rethink / redesign.

Has anyone downloaded the Nirvana pack? From the preview clip, Lithium sounds like a pretty terrible live version.

My kids love LRB much more than RB. The fact that my 5 year old can bang the drums to the beat and still score in Super Easy just makes this a great game for the little-er ones to sharpen their skills. It’s really more like RB-lite.

I thought “Come As You Are” was quite good, but that’s from the MTV Unplugged sessions. The low-key delivery fits the song well.

I didn’t get to play Lithium, but here’s a video of it as a full band:

Also – as predicted by my Guitar Hero 5 experience, Smells Like Teen Spirit is just not a very fun song to play on plastic instruments for some reason. Very odd for such a hook-y and classic song.

Drumming it felt good enough for me, which is all I ask.

I love all three Nirvana songs.

I also got the Tom Petty, which is good enough that I put the live CD’s on my Xmas list.
