On my first attempt at Snow (x-gtr) tonight, I missed gold stars by a measly 1000 points. Bah!

It’s really not that hard. It’s just a matter of being able to hit that little hammer-on lick in the verse and strumming everything else – and then repeating 50 times. I doubt it would even take me an hour to 100% this. There’s much harder DLC available (that solo in A7X’s Afterlife continues to kick my ass).

The song IS tiring, though. My left hand was cramping by the time the song reached the three-note chords.

(edit: 372k with a 1439 note streak, missed 100% by 2 notes. I’m trying to get this on video with a shot of my hands so people can see how the fingering should work.)

Hey, wait a minute. Did we really have eight whole posts on the Pixies DLC? And all of them were about the mix up with Monkey’s Gone to Heaven? Was Doolittle so anticipated that we’ve universally assumed it’s awesome? Or was everyone so disappointed they can’t bear to speak of it?

As for me, the majority of the tracks are pretty easy, except for the occasional long strings of 64th notes or whatever the hell they are. Even on Expert, a song like Debaser isn’t too tough. But I have a great time playing it and the rest of the album nonetheless.

Everyone raves about the Pixies, and I never “got” them, so when the DLC was announced I decided I’d give it a real shot and I bought the album. Listened to it for the couple months leading up to the DLC, and it’s just not my thing. I might pick up Debaser, but I don’t imagine I’ll ever want the whole album for Rock Band.

Since you asked.

I totally never got the Pixies. Even now, I’ve tried playing along with a bunch of their DLC that we bought in the office, and I can’t bring myself to buy a single tune. And I buy everything.

I wasn’t familiar with the Pixies before trying Rock Band. And so when the downloads were announced, I watched some Youtube videos, and I honestly don’t get the appeal of the band. That doesn’t mean I won’t like them if I bought their album and gave them a real chance, of course. Most of my favorite music I didn’t really like on a first or second or even a fifth listening. But that kind of music, that slowly grows on you, is the one that grows to be your favorite sometimes. So maybe the Pixies are in that category, but it seems to risky to try that out in Rock Band.

Given all the raving people have done about the Pixies, I went and checked out the videos for the album on Youtube. I was a little too young to catch them when they were new (I started listening to popular music around 92 or 93, so I just missed them), and I just missed them when I was broadening my tastes backward, probably because I focused more on classic rock and metal. Anyway, Wave of Mutilation in Rock Band was my first exposure to them, and it’s not a terribly impressive song. Most of the songs from the album look a bit more fun to play, but they’re still not quite worth purchasing since they have no emotional association like they would if I’d ever been a fan.

Of course, the fact that my Rock Band play time has dropped off to almost zero has affected my enthusiasm for DLC as well. There’s no way I could pass up new Rush, and I’m getting the Who pack day one, but expensive packs of bands I don’t especially care about aren’t high priority.

I like the Pixies, but can’t say I love them. I only ended up buying maybe half the album. It’s not a good album to play all the way through unless you really like the band, but there are at least a handful of songs that work well. Debaser is obviously great fun, and I Bleed and Dead are cool as well. Then you have crap like Silver

I hate the fucking Pixies. But I like Danny Elfman in movies. Does that count?

Oh man, what did I start? Or what did Justin start? Moore’s going to show up in this thread and just start crying.

See? I knew it couldn’t be coincidence that they were barely mentioned in the thread. I was hoping it was awe, but it appears it was apathy.

Of course, if you don’t like the Pixies, there’s little to awe you. As I said, most of the tracks are pretty easy (at least on guitar), so a healthy enjoyment of the tunes goes a long way towards making the album a must buy.

As Freezepop once said: “I love it!”

I was certainly baffled at the fact that a Pixies album showed up in DLC. I like the two records that are good, but they took a while to grow on me, and Doolittle works best as a piece, which Rock Band doesn’t support yet. I’m kind of shocked that they didn’t go for Surfer Rosa. At least then you could hear your friends disco whoop about their Broken Face and screech out Bone Machine. And sing Gigantic. And then have fun explaining to them what it’s about.

Who is the marshal of this bad taste parade? I want it taken to some other forum.

I’m not a huge Pixies fan but I did pick up the album. I appreciate their contribution to music as a whole - without them we may never have had Nirvana. Kurt Cobain once said that “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was simply his attempt to write a Pixies song. He just got their style more right than they ever did.

For anyone interested in not getting the whole album, my personal favorites to play are:

La La Love You
Debaser
Here Comes Your Man
There Goes My Gun

Seriously?

I prefer the less right style, in that case.

I’m amazed by the Pixies hate in this thread. The Pixies are fucking awesome. But hey, to each their own.

So insufficient exuberance = hate? Good to know.

Or were you referring to the single post that contained a negative reaction stronger than apathy?

I’m guessing the apathy displayed by most doesn’t register when someone is reading the posts, whereas the one post that expresses hate gives an impression that’s more overpowering. I could see why someone would get that impression, even if it’s not true.

For my part, for example, I just hadn’t heard of them, and didn’t like what little I heard on Youtube, and that was the case for many of us. I even acknowledged that it’s possible they’re one of the best bands that I’d love if I gave them a dozen more listens, but hey, it’s hard to do that when you’re trying to decide on DLC purchasing decisions.

Sometimes it’s easier to save your money for The Who, who we already know we’ll love.

I was never a Pixies fan so I only picked up Debaser and Here Comes Your Man. I haven’t played them a whole lot because they’re pretty easy and not all that rockin’, so I don’t really have anything to say. It was the last DLC I’ve bought, though.
